Deadline land, many hope that Girardi signing and Miller-and-Ott deals are tips of the iceberg

For those of us who aren't glued to Twitter or the interweb, the Dan Girardi's re-signing with the New York Rangers and the Ott-and-Ryan Miller-for-Jaroslav-Halak-etc. trades were the first of perhaps a dozen or so meaningful moves that will result from literally thousands of trade rumors per actual transaction made...

But the Sportsnets, ESPNs and deadline-drama-loving fans are obviously hoping that Friday's transactions broke a dam's worth of inactivity ahead of what many of you are probably hoping will be a 35-to-45-transaction period of time between now and 3 PM EST next Wednesday, and both TSN's Bob McKenzie (on Twitter) and ESPN's Scott Burnside and Craig Custance suggested that we've not seen the last of Buffalo Sabres GM Tim Murray's pre-trade deadline moves...

Interest In Steve Ott Plus A Look At The Canucks

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

- There has been so much focus on Matt Moulson that you forget the Buffalo Sabres have a long list of pending UFAs, and another forward generating lots of interest is Steve Ott.

"Perhaps more than Moulson," said one NHL team executive on Tuesday.

Ott is the kind of grinding center that playoff-bound teams would love to add and it sounds like he’s going to be moved before March 5.

- ...So I suspect any moves you see the Canucks make from here on in will have a bigger-picture feel, the organization realizing it is no longer among the elite clubs in the league after knocking at the door for a half decade, understanding that it needs to inject more youth into its lineup to remain on the right track.

So, forget any trades for a rental player to help get a few more wins this season. While the Canucks still hope to get healthy and win a round or two this season, management's focus between now and the March 5 trade deadline, but probably especially in the offseason will be move some veteran bodies out the door and get a bit younger. It's the smart thing to do.

The Sedin twins aren't going anywhere, but I would surmise that next to them over the next year, almost any other veteran player could be moved if it's a deal that makes sense for the Canucks.

Ott Or Marchand?

from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,

Talk to players who regularly face Steve Ott and Brad Marchand and one thing you'll hear is their skill sets are as impressive as their mouths are loud.

"The most important thing is they can play," Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher told NHL.com. "If they weren't able to play the game, no one would pay attention to them. They're important players for their team, and they play an important role. You add in the fact they can play that agitator role, they can get under the skin of their opponent, and that is a skill as well. They both have that ability, and I guess they're both pretty good at it."...

Ott had 24 points in 48 games last season and averaged more than 38 points over the prior four seasons. Marchand had 18 goals and 36 points in 45 games last season after putting up career highs across the board in 2011-12 with 28 goals, 27 assists and 55 points.

They know they're on their game and at their most annoying when the opponent is trying to talk back at them. Ott said he regularly hears it from players on the bench and even opposing coaches. He smiles and keeps talking because he knows whatever he's saying is making an impact and helping his team.

"When you're not effective is when the other team is quiet toward you, no one is saying a word out there," Ott told NHL.com. "Those awkward situations, that's the telltale sign that you're not effective. But when guys on the bench are yelling at you, opposing coaches, then you're doing your job."

Steve Ott Questions Suspension Length For Kaleta

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo Post,

Patrick Kaleta has appealed his 10-game suspension and the Sabres are waiting to hear when his appeal process will be heard. Tonight's game against Vancouver will already be his fourth one out of the lineup. Fellow Sabres agitator Steve Ott said the issue he's had with Brendan Shanahan's ruling is that Columbus defenseman Jack Johnson was not hurt on the play and went on to get 23 minutes of ice time in the Oct. 10 game against the Sabres.

"It's hard because there's no injury on the play," Ott told The News today after the Sabres' pregame skate. "I have a hard time with it for that simple fact. Is it suspendable? Absolutely, as in the guy could have really been hurt. But could have is not good enough for me.

"No one wants to see anybody injured by any means but that has to play in the equation if you're going to throw a book at somebody. He didn't even fall. Could it have been bad? Sure. For me, the injury has to play into the situation."

Teams Show Interest In Steve Ott

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

Mike Ribeiro was shipped out Friday by the Dallas Stars and now we wait and see if the same will happen to Steve Ott as the club tries to reshape its core a little and get younger.

A source told ESPN.com that Ott is getting plenty of interest, just as he did before the trade deadline.

Maybe it’s just me, but Ott’s size and versatility as a second- or third-line winger would be just what the Montreal Canadiens need. He’s be a perfect fit for a team lacking toughness and size.

What Would You Give Up For Steve Ott Or Mike Ribeiro?

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN

, “It obviously makes you a little nervous,” Ott told ESPN.com after the morning skate. “I’ve been with the Stars since I was drafted. When your name gets mentioned in the rumors, it gets to you a little and you think about it. But truthfully, I do take it as a huge compliment. Obviously if there’s playoff contending teams that think I’m a puzzle piece, I take that as a compliment. But I want to stay here. I want to be part of the solution. But I can only control what I can control.”

Ribeiro, who has another year on his contract next season at $5 million, is taking the rumors in stride.

“If I’m traded, I’m traded, not much I can do about it,” Ribeiro said Tuesday. “Obviously I’d like to be here with the Stars. I want to re-sign here and stay with Dallas for the rest of my career. But you can’t control that. There’s a few more days and we’ll see after the 27th if I’m still here.”

Steve Ott Learns You Can’t Make Peter Laviolette Wait

A little pushing match as the teams left the ice tonight after the first period.

added 12:41am 12/22/11, from Sam Carchidi of Broad Street Bull,

“It’s disrespect of our building. Just let our team off,” Ott said. “He obviously thought he has a higher power than everybody else and a little bit more arrogance. Of all the coaches in the whole NHL, that’s probably the first time I’ve seen that.

“I would never do that if I was in Philadelphia in their building and had to walk through their lineup. Just let us go and show a little respect, that’s all.”

What Would You Offer For Steve Ott If He Is Available?

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

Steve Ott is still trying to recover from appendectomy surgery, and had a small setback last week. However, he skated yesterday, hopes to work slowly into the Stars’ mini-camp that starts Friday, and said he is planning on being on the ice for the March 2 game against the Kings at American Airlines Center.

But there are a couple of things that could get in the way.

One, his conditioning might not be up to the standards he needs by that time, and two he could be traded when the NHL roster freeze comes off at 11 p.m. Feb. 28.

So, has Ott thought that he may have played his last game in a Stars’ uniform?

“That thought has never entered my mind,’’ he said via a phone interview. “Honestly, I’m a pretty simple guy, I work as hard as I can to prepare for the next game and play the next game, and I let the rest take care of itself.’‘

Determining The Value Of Steve Ott

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

I apologize for being late to the party on the Steve Ott contract talks, but I just kind of knew they weren’t making progress, so I put it on the backburner.

The talks are cordial, Ott wants to stay in Dallas, and both sides say everybody is happy and open to negotiations. But the fly in the ointment is that it’s really tough to define what Steve Ott is right now.

Is he a gritty third line forward who can kill penalties, agitate and help the team win? Is he a top six forward who can score goals and help make a skilled line tougher? Is he the elusive shut-down checking line center who can win faceoffs that this team so desperately needs?

Because that makes a lot of difference in how a player gets paid.

Wild Players Say Ott Should Be Suspended For Elbow On Sykora

via Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants,

Wild players all were talking about the hit this morning and how the league “better suspend” Ott. We will see. Unlike Derek Boogaard’s elbow last year on Brandon Prust, there wasn’t an outcry on this one in Canada…

Well, Ott took a leaping elbow into the head on Sykora in my opinion. The league allegedly wants to rid head shots, well, then throw the book at Ott, too. Or maybe Stephane Robidas for his textbook boarding on Mikko Koivu last night that was somehow missed.

Ott Suspended Two Games

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk just confirmed that the NHL has suspended Steve Ott for two games for his hip check on Blues defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo Saturday in St. Louis.

The NHL has not released its reasoning, and it generally does not take questions on its suspensions, so they will probably simply explain that Ott is a repeat offender and that the check was dangerous.

I disagree, but what do I know.

added 1:07pm,

TORONTO (October 27, 2009) – Dallas Stars forward Steve Ott has been suspended for two games, without pay, as the result of a low-hit on St. Louis Blues defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo in NHL game #138, October 24.

The incident occurred at 8:33 of the second period.  No penalty was assessed on the play.

Ott, who was suspended for one game February 28, 2009, now is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Accordingly, he forfeits $36,585.36 in salary based on the number of games (82) in a season, rather than the number of days (193). The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Ott Will Be Talking With Campbell &  Scuderi Gets Fined

via Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk just confirmed that Steve Ott will have a phone hearing with the NHL on his hip check on Blues defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo Saturday.

Nieuwendyk said he has no feeling on whether Ott could receive a suspension, just that the league said a lot of incidents had happened over the weekend and they are being proactive on them.

Also, Mr. Campbell was on HNIC Radio this afternoon and stated Rob Scuderi was fined for his hit on Jason Chimera.

Steve Ott Hits Draw The Blues Attention

from Jeremy Rutherford of the Morning Skate at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

Here’s somee postgame reaction from the Blues following Saturday’s loss to the Stars.

In the second period, Dallas’ Steve Ott leveled Blues defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo. Ott laid a hip check on Colaiacovo, which instigated a team-wide brawl, ending with a combined six penalties on both teams.

“There’s 18,000 people that will agree with me and say that was a dirty hit,” Colaiacovo said. “Hopefully the league will take a look at it, and do what’s right.”

added 3:23pm, I have added the Ott hit on Colaiacovo below the first video.

Dirtiest Guys in the NHL According to Other Players

From TSN:

Chris Pronger and Steve Ott are the dirtiest players in the National Hockey League, according to a survey of their fellow players.

A Sports Illustrated poll of 324 players that is to appear in this week’s issue has Anaheim Ducks defenceman Pronger and Dallas Stars forward Ott in a tie, each chosen by 13 per cent of their peers.

Jarkko Ruutu of the Ottawa Senators was third at 12 per cent, with Sean Avery of the New York Rangers fourth at 10 per cent, followed by Scott Hartnell of the Philadelphia Flyers at five per cent.

continued…

Update 3:11pm ET: From the Detroit Free Press, Chris Pronger responds—

Told of the survey results this morning, Pronger laughed and said he disagreed.

“That’s their prerogative,” he said, adding that it didn’t surprise him he won. “There’s always a lot of whining out on the ice,” he said.

Pronger said it was possibly based more on his past than his present (he has only six penalty minutes in the 2009 playoffs, for example – none of them against Detroit).

Ott will not be able to play today (Sunday) against Pittsburgh.

A match penalty is given for deliberately injuring an opponent. Ott gouged Anaheim’s Travis Moen in the scrum.

Ott Coming Into His Own

From Richard Durrett at the Dallas Stars Blog:

Ott bangs the boards, fights for loose pucks, gets in front of the net and has shown a deft scoring touch too. He’s becoming more and more like a Brenden Morrow clone by the game. Ott had a goal and two assists on Friday, extending his career-long point streak to seven games (4 goals, 6 assists). He also has at least one point in nine of the last 11 games.

“If I can be a quarter of the player Brenden is, that’s great,” Ott said. “He’s a great leader and a team guy and I’d love to have him back in this dressing room. I’m just trying to play hard hockey and tha’ts something Brenden brings on a nightly basis and he’s a mentor to me so I want to keep playing that way.”

Ott has said for years that he was more than just a physical player. Now he’s proving it.

Ott Doesn’t Answer The Bell

from Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe,

On a night when he went low on Bruins Stephane Yelle and Milan Lucic, and ultimately punched out his time card with 18 penalty minutes, the Stars’ Steve Ott achieved a feat that few have managed to accomplish….

Saturday night, Ott took his under-the-skin game to new lows by appearing to target the knees of Yelle and Lucic, then refusing to answer the bell for his questionable tactics. After Ott went low on Yelle, Shawn Thornton tried to retaliate but was instead tagged with a four-minute roughing double minor. Later in the game, Shane Hnidy and Lucic tried to fight Ott but couldn’t get approval.

Questions for the Dallas Stars

Today’s Q&A session with the Dallas Stars features some thoughts from Steve Ott and coach Dave Tippett.

Q. Steve, one step down. Now you got to go back to Detroit where things haven’t been great. How are you going to focus for that?

STEVE OTT: Obviously, things haven’t been great in Detroit. Starting with your goalie, when he hasn’t really won in that building, it kind of sets up for a great night, I think.  What better time than now to, you know, put a little bit of pressure on them, Marty have a big night, get out there with a win.

Steve Ott Re-Signs with Dallas for 2 Years

From the Dallas Stars:

The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has re-signed center Steve Ott to a two-year contract worth $2.85 million ($1.35 million in ’08-09 and $1.5 million in ’09-10) through the 2009-10 season. Ott’s current contract was set to expire on June 30, 2008.

“Steve Ott has done a great job of earning this contract and we are very pleased to have him secure in Dallas for the next two years,” said Co-General Manager Les Jackson. “He has developed into a valuable piece in our team chemistry and he brings a solid work ethic to our hockey club day in and day out.”

Following Ott’s Lead

from Jennifer Floyd Engel of the Star-Telegram,

A lot of the Stars are miffed because everybody seems down on them, based on their performance in March, failing to realize how ugly the view was for those watching.

Ott doesn’t do miffed. He does in your face.

This is how I spent almost 20 minutes in the Stars’ locker room after the finale, listening to Ott preaching why this year would be different. He went from locker to locker, talking about what each guy was going to bring.

“Warrior,” pointing to Matty Norstrom’s locker.

“Mike is going to be there,” pointing to Modano’s.

“He is one of the most determined guys in the league to get the first round off his back,” pointing to Marty Turco.

Art of Agitation

From Mike Heika at The Dallas Morning News,

“He gets guys stirred up, I can tell you that,” said teammate Stephane Robidas, who has seen Ott’s handiwork up-close and personal. “There are times when guys just want to kill him.”

Many of Ott’s barbs are R-rated. He sprinkles in Sopranos-like dialogue with taunts that would make the folks at HBO blush. When asked for a few “Ott-isms,” Stars coach Dave Tippett cautioned, “I think we’ll have to go to a different network if you want to hear those.”

But Ott does have a subtle side.  In a recent game against the Oilers, rookie Zack Stortini came into the faceoff circle and Ott pulled Stortini’s shoulder pad forward to get a better view of the name on the back of the jersey.”

“I was just trying to find out who he was,” Ott joked.
