TORONTO (January 24, 2013) – Overnight data from BBM Canada confirms that last night’s NHL ON TSN match-up featuring Toronto @ Pittsburgh was watched by an average audience of 1.4 million viewers – the network’s most-watched regular season NHL game since 2009.
Overall, nearly 4.8 million Canadians watched some part of the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Audience levels peaked at 2.2 million viewers on TSN with just under two minutes left in the third period.

NEW YORK (June 25, 2012) – NHL Network U.S. will simulcast TSN2’s live coverage of the 2012 Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee Announcement tomorrow, June 26 at 3:00 p.m. ET.
The 2012 Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee Announcement will be made by Bill Hay, Hockey Hall of Fame CEO and Chairman of the Board, along with Co-Chairs of the Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee Jim Gregory and Pat Quinn.
Some of the first-year eligible players for the Hockey Hall of Fame include Joe Sakic, Brendan Shanahan, Mats Sundin, Jeremy Roenick, Curtis Joseph, Gary Roberts and Claude Lemieux.
TSN’s Steve Kouleas hosts the coverage and is joined by TSN and NHL Network analyst Mike Johnson and Steve Dryden, Managing Editor of NHL on TSN. Reporter Ryan Rishaug will report live from the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Canadian TV Ratings For Round 2

There are NHL playoff rating and then there are Canadian NHL playoff ratings. As expected, the upset of Vancouver in Round 1 almost halved the numbers CBC garnered in 2011’s Round 2, when the Canucks defeated Nashville. CBC’s coverage of the Washington/New York Rangers series averaged over 1.5 million viewers (all ratings +2) a game while the New Jersey/Philadelphia series averaged over 1.4 million viewers a game (for a 1.49 M. average in Round 2).
By comparison, the Canucks’ playoff games in 2011 averaged 2.8 million viewers a game, pushing CBC’s average rating per game to a healthy 2.16 million. The ratings would not have been as high had the Ottawa Senators made it past Round 1 this year, but they still would have trumped the all-American series just concluded. The last time no Canadian teams made it past Round 1 was 1996 when games averaged 1.36 M.

Instant Updates- Getting It Right Should Be First Priority

Reporting has become a perilous business in the era of social media, shaved to seconds, not hours, in the pursuit of scoops and breaking news.
Using Twitter, Facebook and other Internet outlets, news is instantaneous. As we’ve seen in innumerable gaffes on these platforms lately, there is precious little time for reflection or fact-checking.
Nowhere was the breath-taking speed more conspicuous than last Monday’s NHL trade deadline day, where scoops – when they finally arrived in earnest five hours into the network TV shows – came quickly. By our count, Rogers Sportsnet nudged slightly ahead of TSN on the scoop category (the prized pelt of BlackBerry journalism) in relation to the 15 deals of the day.
But how do TSN and Sportsnet fact-check under the white-hot glare of instant deadlines? Do they use the same protocols? Is there time for a background call to verify trade details when your opponent can trump you in a heartbeat?

All About Revenge

Throughout my career I was called into many games like the recent Bruins-Sabres rematch where bad blood was still brewing from a previous incident or even a brawl. I loved the excitement and the challenge of being pressed into inaction for these types of encounters. One such assignment change involved the Boston Bruins and the Hartford Whalers.
I was at home in Sarnia, Ontario with a very rare weekend off. Early Sunday morning, I was abruptly awakened from a sound sleep by a telephone call from Director of Officiating John McCauley. In typical McCauley fashion he said, “Hey Big Guy (an oxymoron to say the least), wake up - I need you to catch a plane to Hartford for a game tonight.”
I thought that one of my colleagues must have been injured the night before for John to assign me to a game on such short notice. My thought in this regard was reinforced by the fact that John attempted to give each one of his officials the very occasional weekend at home during the season and would only alter it if there was an emergency. John obviously thought it was an emergency; not through injury however but a call to arms!
McCauley went on to tell me that Boston and Harford had played the night before in the Garden and it had resulted in a real mess. Full line brawls and excessive stick related incidents erupted throughout the game. The real storyline (and need for me to go to Hartford for the rematch McCauley lamented) was because of the telephone calls he had received immediately after the game from both teams’ general managers and coaches complaining how horrible the referee had been in that game. According to both sides, it is a small miracle that none of their players were injured, maimed or killed!

More than 300 of the NHL’s regular season contests will be televised by the League’s national broadcast partners during the 2011-12 season.
The League unveiled the national television schedule for the upcoming season Thursday, highlighted by the 2011 Compuware NHL Premiere games and a Friday matinee on NBC the day after Thanksgiving.

Report: Kevin Dineen to be Panthers New Head Coach

FLA Panthers say they have “major announcement” scheduled for tomorrow. Won’t be surprised if it’s to name Kevin Dineen as new head coach.

The Florida Panthers have scheduled a Wednesday press conference where they will announce former NHLer Kevin Dineen as their next head coach.
Dineen, 47, has spent the past six years as the head coach of the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League, and won the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL’s outstanding coach, as voted by members of the media, in his first season behind the bench.

Iginla a Hit in Kandahar

We posted about this last night, but today CalgaryFlames.com provides more details of Jarome Iginla’s trip (along with Jayna Hefford and Marie-Philip Poulin, both members of Canada’s gold medal winning women’s hockey team of 2010) to Afghanistan this week:
The entourage arrived at 10:00 a.m. Kandahar time and stepped off the plane into 38 C temperatures. At that point Iginla became the first active National Hockey League player to pay a visit to troops in the field. The first stop was the outdoor ball hockey rink. It was here that [TSN’s Gord] Miller realized what he had known for a long time—the Flames captain is a special human being.
“He stood on that concrete floor for two hours talking and signing autographs and having his picture taken. Then he played ball hockey for 15 minutes in that heat,” said Miller.
The group attended various functions including a tour of the Task Force Kandahar Headquarters, a commemorative wreath laying and a social barbecue with troops. At the later, many of the troops who had taken photos earlier in the day had printed them for Iginla to sign.
“I know people in Calgary know what kind of person Jarome is. But he was incredible. It underlies the character of the guy,” said Miller. “I can honestly say I have never seen anyone that patient, that kind, with everyone. He asked some great questions. He was unbelievable. He had time for everyone. He just made everyone feel good.”

Cable sports channel TSN is seriously considering starting its own sports radio network to challenge the FAN 590 in Toronto and the rest of the country, The Globe and Mail has learned.
The challenge would ratchet up the corporate rivalry between Rogers Communications Inc. and CTV Inc. for the sports audience in Canada. The FAN is owned by Rogers, and TSN by CTV Inc.
“Will there be a branded TSN radio coming up soon? I’d say we’re looking at it for sure,” TSN president Stewart Johnson said. “It could be a matter of a branded content as opposed to a branded station, or it could be making better use of our guys. … But it’s a possibility.”

Watching The WJC

What if they held a hockey tournament in the middle of the forest and no one noticed? That was an accurate description of the world junior hockey championship until TSN decided in 1991 to make the annual event into something on the order of the Super Bowl. Or bigger. The prescient decision to commit the entire network to the efforts of under-20 players over the length of the Christmas and New Year’s holiday break proves yet again that television defines the event, not the other way around.
Certainly, the tournament is no indicator of NHL success as the John Slaneys, Justin Pogges and Marty Murrays have shown. Canada’s dominance of the junior event hasn’t necessarily predicted Olympic dominance either. But captured in the moment by TV, the juniors’ passionate embrace of the Maple Leaf blurs rational description.
In the days before it obtained its current full complement of the NHL’s TV package, TSN was looking around for a signature hockey property to fill its schedule. CBC had carried some of the earlier world junior tournaments since their inception in 1977, but the event was overshadowed at the Corp. by Hockey Night in Canada. It also fell on the holidays, leading some to think no one would watch during a time saturated with traditional football bowl games.

Mike Johnson - NHL Analyst

Former Canadiens forward Mike Johnson isn’t on team charters any longer, now boarding commercial flights for his broadcast assignments as a hockey analyst for TSN and the NHL Network….
In the studio and broadcast booths, Johnson cherishes remaining close to the game he loves. And he’s not afraid to speak his mind, aware that players who in many cases were teammates or opponents are among those he critiques.
“At times, I might be critical of players who are vastly superior to me,” he said. “But if I’m going to say something on the air that’s critical, it’s something I’d also say to the person’s face and be able to defend.”
Text messages will fly back and forth: “Hey Mike, I hear you took a shot at me on the show ...” might get the lighthearted reply: “Don’t fall down and I won’t be able to say anything.”
With no formal training, Johnson listens to as much as he watches the games he’s not working. He’ll seek out feedback from industry veterans “and try to develop good habits and watch for ways to improve, as I did when I played.”

Love RDS but wish you could watch the Habs in English more often than, say, the odd Saturday? I carry good news.
TSN announced this afternoon that they are now the exclusive regional English-language broadcaster of the Montreal Canadiens. TSN will carry 24 Habs games this season, and at least 30 over for 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.

Okay, having cleared our throat… here’s how we’ve rated the Canadian network TV raters
After 40 Minutes (Hockey Night In Canada): They used to say Fred Astaire gave Ginger Rogers class and she gave him sex appeal. Well, Kelly Hrudey has given the frothing Mike Milbury a little class and Milbury has given Hrudey a dash of passion. The combination has spawned the go-to 2010 playoff panel.
Typically, Milbury rants about the enervation of the sport (in one fit of pique, he walked off the set, half in jest, half in earnest). Meanwhile, Hrudey has become the Jackson Pollock of the telestrator, putting computerized squiggles on the strategic bones of the game. It works because Milbury’s unpredictability and Hrudey’s pointed barbs about the San Jose Sharks or Roberto Luongo carry bite. It also seems to focus host Ron MacLean into his best work. Now if they would stop sapping the energy by going to P.J. Stock in his video prison set. Rating: B+
TSN: Their panels change so rapidly during the playoffs, it’s a wonder they don’t get a too-many-men-on-the-set penalty….

According to the hockey experts gathered by the NHL on TSN, the Stanley Cup champion is…tougher to pick than ever. In trying to get a consensus pre-season pick from a panel of 13 experts, seven different teams earned votes. The defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers, however, attracted the most attention, earning three votes each.

TSN welcomes a new recruit to its roster with NHL coach Craig MacTavish joining the NHL ON TSN broadcast team as a guest analyst for the 2009-10 season.
MacTavish will have 25 appearances in studio, making his broadcast debut on Monday, Sept. 21 during the pre-season game featuring Pittsburgh @ Montreal at 7:30 p.m. ET on TSN2.

Is it just me or does the Hockey Night In Canada theme song lost it’s luster now that is on TSN?
They have completely over used the jingle, playing it at every opportunity. And they gave it a terrible accompanying video montage.
Meanwhile CBC has come up with a catchy tune which I think I might actually like better.

The Hockey Theme With Words

CTV Inc. confirmed today that the Barenaked Ladies rendition of the iconic “The Hockey Theme” will debut on NHL ON TSN on New Year’s Eve Dec. 31. A special high definition video of the band performing the Delores Claman classic will air during the first intermission of the “Battle of Alberta” with the Edmonton Oilers taking on the Calgary Flames at 10pm ET on TSN.
The Juno Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated Barenaked Ladies recorded their own bluegrass version of “The Hockey Theme” last month giving the song lyrics for the first time.

Canadians Watching Hockey

Two months into the NHL season, national audiences for hockey telecasts in Canada have shown big increases.
At the CBC, the Hockey Night in Canada viewership has grown in all time slots, with the pregame show making the largest gain. It’s averaging 527,000 viewers, for an increase of 56 per cent over last year.
The Game 1 audience is 1.348 million, up 13 per cent.
Game 2’s 763,000 is 19 per cent higher than last year.
TSN’s NHL telecasts have an average audience of 496,000 viewers, up 21 per cent from last year.

TSN Adds Tortorella & Ferraro

TSN has added two big names to its roster with NHL coach John Tortorella and 18-year NHLer Ray Ferraro joining NHL on TSN for the 2008-09 season.
Tortorella moves directly from behind an NHL bench into the TSN studio, making his broadcast debut as part of the NHL on TSN panel for 60 games, including weekly appearances on TSN’s marquee Wednesday Night Hockey telecasts. The 16-year NHL coaching veteran and 2004 Jack Adams Trophy winner will appear alongside studio host James Duthie and Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger.
Ferraro will work approximately 30 games as a game analyst, making his NHL on TSN debut in the broadcast booth October 14…

Emery in the Hot Seat on OTR

For the first time since the end of the Ottawa Senators’ season, Ray Emery will face the media, as he sits down for a one-on-one in-depth interview with TSN’s Michael Landsberg, airing tonight on Off The Record (OTR) at 6 p.m. ET.
The interview, a special extended two-part Up Front segment, also marks the first time the controversial goaltender has spoken publicly since being bought out by his former NHL club and joining the new Russian Continental Hockey League.
The show can be watched live on TSN in Canada, or on video which will be provided online here after the show has concluded.

A note from the league—
NHL Network’s special Draft programming begins Friday, June 20, with the NHL Draft Preview Show live from Scotiabank Place at 6 p.m. ET. After all 30 first-round selections are made, NHL Network will be the place to be for the live NHL Draft First Round Recap Show. Fans can tune-in for instant analysis of how their favorite team fared as NHL Network breaks down all of the Round 1 action.
The first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft on Friday will start at 7 p.m., ET. In Canada, NHL Network will simulcast TSN’s live coverage of Round 1, which begins at 7 p.m., ET. RDS in Canada also provides live coverage of Round 1. In the U.S., VERSUS will air TSN’s live feed of Round 1 in its entirety. NHL Radio’s live audio coverage of Round 1 can be heard on radio stations across North America, on XM 204 and on NHL.com.

Glenn Healy Leaving TV for the NHLPA

Hockey analyst Glenn Healy is leaving TSN for a high ranking post with the National Hockey League Players’ Association, sources have confirmed.
Healy, who was active with the association as a player, is expected to be involved in a player liaison capacity.
The former NHL goalie has built a successful career in television, first with the CBC from 2001 to 2004 and, for the past four seasons, with TSN.

Glenn Healy has been named the new Director of Player Affairs for the National Hockey League Players’ Association.
Healy will fulfill a wide range of responsibilities for the Players’ Association. In his role, he will focus on player relations, coordinating his efforts with the NHLPA’s Ombudsman and Divisional Representatives, along with working closely with the NHL Alumni office.

Ice Level Game Call

TSN will use a new play-by-play configuration for tonight’s Montreal Canadiens-Buffalo Sabres telecast. Chris Cuthbert and Glenn Healy will call the game at ice level, which they’ve done before, but this time Pierre McGuire will provide additional analysis from the broadcast booth as an “eye in the sky.”
TSN’s Mike Milbury called the appointment of Brett Hull, who has no managerial experience, to the position of interim co-general manager of the Dallas Stars “an insult” to all NHL general managers.
