Ex-Ref Fraser Would Have Given A Major To Mike Green

My take on the play at the time it happened remains unchanged. Mike Green would receive a major and automatic game misconduct for cross-checking while Derek Dorsett a minor penalty for boarding. The teams would play 4 on 4 for two minutes at which point the NY Rangers would receive a 3 minute power-play for the balance of the major penalty to Green.

Mike Green Trying To Remove The Target On His Back

Late in the Capitals’ 4-0 win over Winnipeg on Thursday night, Mike Green gathered the puck behind the net and skated to the half wall to clear it out of the defensive zone. After Green released the puck, Jets forward Evander Kane cross-checked the defenseman into the boards.
It was a late and unnecessary hit, one that earned Kane a minor for cross-checking and a 10-minute misconduct, and it was the latest example of opponents targeting Washington’s No. 1 defenseman. Welcome back to game action, Mike Green.
“It’s a part of the game; obviously it’s a physical game, but every little opportunity we have to minimize it. And he’s a targeted man,” Coach Adam Oates said. “He’s got to come to grips with that — that they’re after him. They’re talking about Mike Green tonight. It will sure help him the more he understands that.”

Green Re-Signs With Washington

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Mike Green to a three-year, $18.25 million contract extension, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. Green will earn $6 million in 2012-13 and 2013-14 and $6.25 million in 2014-15.
“We are pleased to re-sign Mike Green to a new contract,” said McPhee. “Mike is one of the best young defensemen in the National Hockey League and is just entering his prime. He will continue to be a key part of our team moving forward.”

What kind of contract would you give a defenseman who scored 149 points in 143 games over two seasons, with a plus/minus of plus-63?
Now, what kind of contract would you give a defenseman who scored 31 points in 81 games over two injury-plagued seasons, with a plus/minus of plus-11?
Herein lies the problem for the Washington Capitals and Mike Green, who rejected a 1-year, $5-million qualifying offer on Sunday in favor of further negotiations on a long-term deal. He’s an above-average defenseman, and an elite puck-mover. But he signed his 4-year, $21 million contract back when he was the first example above, and at 26 years old he’s now Exhibit B.
So what do you do with Mike Green if you’re GM George McPhee?

Mike Green Wants To Remain With The Capitals

Under the terms of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, to retain his rights the Capitals are required to make Green a qualifying offer equal to his 2011-12 salary of $5 million.
“That’s something that we’ll talk about, I’m sure, after things settle down here,” Green said, “I’m excited to come back if that’s the game plan. That’s what I want, but we’ll see.” After four seasons of playing no fewer than 68 games, Green has missed 83 games the past two seasons and that could impact the term and value of his next contract. In all likelihood Green will accept only a one-year deal that will take him into unrestricted free agency at the age of 27 next year.
If the Caps cannot come to an agreement with Green, they likely would receive a first-, second- and third-round draft pick, dependent on his 2012-13 salary and the rules of a new CBA.
Green made no bones about his desire to return to Washington for an eighth season. “Absolutely, I love it here,” he said. “This is a great organization, a great city and I believe that we’re going to win a Cup here and I want to be a part of it.”

Mike Green Feeling Great After 2 Years Of Physical And State Of Mind Health Issues

Ever since Mike Green returned to the Capitals’ lineup in mid-February following sports hernia surgery, he’s fielded questions about when he would return to his previous form.
But that ignores the reality that the defenseman’s game has changed, partly in his natural evolution as a player but also because of Coach Dale Hunter’s system.
A day after he led Washington in ice time (33:28) in its 2-1 double overtime win in Game 2 against the Bruins, Green said this is the best he’s felt since before the injuries began piling up in the past two seasons.
“I feel great, yeah. A lot of energy. Probably the best I’ve felt in two years,” Green said. “My body and my state of mind. I think kind of, over the last couple years it’s been tough with injuries and stuff. I finally feel good. Not only that, I think it’s all about feel, too, and I have a good feel right now. I don’t know how to explain it.”

“No, I didn’t get my elbow up at all. I don’t know if you watched it, there was no elbow involved. It was my shoulder but I did make contact with his head, which is unacceptable.”

Groin Issue A Problem For Mike Green

Mike Green’s comeback from a significant groin tear may be short-lived.
Green pulled himself out of Saturday night’s 5-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks after taking just nine shifts for 7:11 of ice time. Green took just two shifts in the second period and did not report to the bench for the third period.
After the game Capitals coach Dale Hunter told reporters that Green’s groin tightened up in the second period and that’s why he was taken out of the game. He’ll be evaluated again on Sunday.
Green sent up a few red flags last week when he told reporters not to expect too much from him when he returned to the lineup after missing nearly two months with a groin injury.
Back then, Green talked about having to alter his skating stride to compensate for the torn groin he suffered back on Nov. 11.

Good And Bad News On Mike Green

The good news for disgruntled Caps fans is that Mike Green could be back in the lineup as soon as Friday night against the Buffalo Sabres.
“I just need a few skates to get my lungs and my legs back and I’ll be back in no time,” Green said.
The bad news is that the significant groin injury he suffered on Nov. 11 against the Devils could hamper him for the remainder of the season and, quite possibly, for the rest of his career.

When Will Mike Green Play?

It’s unclear when (Mike) Green, who was not made available to comment for this story, will return from his latest setback, a strained right groin muscle that he suffered in mid-November. When Green’s recovery plateaued two weeks ago, the Capitals decided to take an experimental route with his rehabilitation, according to several people familiar with the situation who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the defenseman’s recovery.
Green received Accelerated Recovery Performance (ARP) treatment, which involves electrical stimulation, in Minnesota, according to those people. It’s unclear whether Green, who skated for five days prior to the NHL’s holiday break, has benefited from the program.
But while Green’s teammates, coaches and agent, as well as Capitals’ officials await his return, all say the groin injury will not pose a significant threat to the defenseman’s career. But there’s no denying that the steady string of ailments have had an impact on it.

The plateau prompted the Capitals to seek another method of approach to Green’s recovery.
“He’ll be joining the club on the trip,” McPhee said. “We just sent him to see somebody that might be able to help, we’re not sure [if it will]. Hopefully when he joins the club on the road he’ll be skating with the club – getting closer.
“He was progressing then sort of plateaued,” McPhee said. “We thought we would try something else. Don’t know if it will make a difference but we’ll know more in a couple of days.”

Too Many Top Defensemen

If you think that determining who the top goalie will be for fantasy teams this season is tough, wait until you attempt to sift through the number of defensemen who have been at or near the top of the scoring race the past couple seasons. I attempted to narrow down this list to five defensemen, but I had waaaay too difficult a time with that. Plus I’d be subjecting myself to far too much criticism from the masses! (By the way, I love the comments… keep ‘em coming.)

With only eight games remaining in the regular season, Boudreau said the chance of Green returning prior to the playoffs is uncertain.
“In a perfect world, we’d like to get him back for the last couple [regular season] games,” Boudreau said. “I think this week will indicate this—by Monday, we’ll know whether we’ll be able to or not.
“We want him in at least three practices, good practices, before we ever put him in a game—minimum,” Boudreau said. “Quite frankly, I play him when [head athletic trainer] Greg Smith says he’s OK to play. I’ll be the first one to put him in.”

He left Friday’s game after playing just 2:25 against the Rangers following a check by Derek Stepan.
“We’re probably going to hold him out a couple of weeks,” McPhee said in a news conference. “We’ve been really careful when players have head injuries. We did the right thing with Mike and he probably could have come back earlier than he did and he felt great. Unfortunately, his second shift of the game [against the Rangers] he got drilled and got hurt. We’ll be really careful we’ll hold him out longer this time—at least a couple of weeks, maybe longer.”
Green is in Calgary with his family following the death of his grandmother.
Asked if Green suffered a concussion or another injury against the Rangers, McPhee said: “Yeah, he’s had some headaches. So we’ve just got to be careful. He’s back home now for a funeral and we’ll know more when he comes back.”

Green Has Concussion-Like Symptoms

Mike Green will likely miss the Capitals’ game against the San Jose Sharks Tuesday at Verizon Center after he was struck by a puck near his right ear and temple area on Sunday against the Penguins. The defenseman, who was hit by a slap shot in the first period of Washington’s 3-0 win and required multiple rows of stitches to close a cut on the side of his head, cited wooziness and headaches—symptoms that are consistent with a concussion—when he talked to reporters after suffering the injury.
Green was held out of practice Monday for precautionary reasons, Coach Bruce Boudreau said, adding that Green would be re-evaluated on Tuesday.

Past the Quarter Poll: Southeast Division Team Ratings from JJ

We’re past the quarter pole, so maybe this is a bit late but it still seems like a good time to me to hand out some assessments to all five Southeast Division clubs. Besides, what’s this quarter pole anyway? Divide the NHL season in equal fours and the resting #StamkosMath calculator tells me that we’d have to stop things at the ten-minute mark of each team’s 21st game of the year to truly be one quarter of the way through. And that just seems troubling.
We’ll go with JJ Ratings rather than the standard report cards because one, everyone else seems to do the report card thing and two, handing out school-type grades gives me terrible nightmares. (Trust me.) Instead, each club’s JJ Rating will reflect their performance on a scale of one to ten (and, since I’ve become a big fan of complicating things, we’ll allow for partial points as well).
Here we are, anywhere from 26-29 games into the 2010-11 slate for the Southeast squads – as good a time as any (maybe just because I say so) to see where we are versus where we thought we’d be, as well as where we might be headed.
We’ll tackle this alphabetically (Ooh… Suspense!)

As usual lately, I’m a day behind. And, really, this time, I have no excuses. (Well, I do, but I won’t bother…) So, why make sure I catch up on JJ’s Three Cheers, you might ask? (I said might, cause it’s just as likely that you won’t.) The goal from the start with this should-be daily feature of mine was to keep a running tally of those honored and to salute the top three (or more) at season’s end. With a thousand other things in the hopper, so far as content from me is concerned (most of which are waiting on a few loose ends to be tied up), I’ll probably be pulling double-duty on these little recaps for much of the season as the workload increases. That said, the need to rewind and reward those on days missed remains. After all, this is an awfully prestigious honor! (Ahem…)

*And big time cheers to Chicago’s Jonathan Toews, who had a four-point night at the expense of the host Thrashers in Atlanta and also tallied in the shootout as the Blackhawks were victorious, 5-4.

Mike Green Improving The Defensive Side Of His Game

The Capitals enter Wednesday’s date with the Toronto Maple Leafs tied for the fourth-best defensive record in the league, and (Mike) Green, according to Boudreau, is a big part of that development.
“I just wish people could see him through my eyes,” said Boudreau, a touch wistfully. “He has been outstanding defensively. So now people are saying, ‘Well, how come you’re not scoring?’ I just told Mike not to change a thing. He’s our best player, game in and game out. When he missed those three games, he was sorely, sorely missed.
“He’s a good player – and he’s matured and he’s done all the things he’s had to do.”...
Green, for his part, is carrying a small but noticeable chip on his shoulder, when it comes to a discussion of his production and contributions.

The alternative to the standard game recap became a staple of my Tampa Bay Lightning coverage last season and it was only a matter of time before it made its season debut here.
Sure, the title of the regular feature has now been copied by a second-rate Bolts blog as of this morning but the content can’t hold a candle to the original and, hell, you’re here with me and they’re, well… They’re sleeping, I’m sure, on Pacific Time and what not… (Lightning coverage from California? Without Tom Poti in the lineup Monday against the Senators there was a considerable chunk of even strength and penalty killing minutes to be picked up by someone, or a combination of someones on the Capitals roster. Throughout the Capitals 3-2 overtime win, that responsibility fell largely to Mike Green, who played a game-high 31 minutes and 53 seconds—many of which came against Ottawa’s primary offensive threats.
While Green may have just one point through three games this season, the two-time Norris Trophy candidate’s defensive contributions have been very visible. In three games, he has a plus-4 rating, eight hits and has blocked seven shots and just been reliable in his own end.
“Me and [Jeff Schultz] have our agendas and that’s to shut down their [No.] 1 line,” Green said.

Two-Goal Start for Sutter, Productive Youth (and No Injuries!) All Good Signs for Carolina

He’s not the youngest player on the roster, nor would he be considered a shocking contributor after last season’s 21-goal, 40-point showing but Brandon Sutter is most certainly a key piece to any Carolina Hurricanes success this year and his two-goal performance in Thursday’s season-opening, 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild in Helsinki, Finland is an excellent early sign for a club hoping for a lot to go their way in 2010-11.
For the Hurricanes, banking on both young guns and sustained health and rejuvenation for several veterans who were hobbled last year, a player like Sutter, at 21, serving as an alternate captain and coming off of a breakthrough season a year ago, will play a major role in determining their fortune. So far, so good for Sutter, who played just six seconds less yesterday than Carolina captain Eric Staal and so far, so good for the ‘Canes, who dressed six players 25-and-under in the game and got production from Sutter (two goals), Zac Dalpe (assist) and Jamie McBain (assist), as well as sparkling reviews for 18-year-old forward Jeff Skinner from that group.

Pivotal Year For Mike Green

Two years ago when the Caps blew a 2-0 series lead against Pittsburgh in the second round, there were questions about Green’s conditioning and lifestyle. Last season, it seemed as though he was trying to do too much, perhaps trying too hard to prove people wrong (the Caps fell off the map against Montreal after leading 3-1 in their first-round series).
Regardless of the root cause of the drop-off in performance at critical times, this is a seminal season for Green. And to his credit Green, who won’t turn 25 until the second week of the regular season, seems to have embraced the challenge of turning critics into believers.
Some of the changes are obvious. He looks leaner. He has been a leader on the ice during training camp scrimmages and drills. Part of the physical changes can be explained by a new offseason workout and diet regime.
“I think in past years I’ve trained hard, but me and my trainer Doug Crashley out of Calgary really focused this year on being powerful and I feel great,” Green said in a recent interview.

Caps are Still the Caps, Which is Bad News for Everyone Else

Of all five Southeast Division clubs, the Washington Capitals of 2010-11 will look the most like themselves from a year ago, having added only a spattering of depth to the lineup that captured the President’s Trophy last season. Alas, as the reigning division champ and still the clear-cut class of the division, if it ain’t broke, well, you know… But a first-round playoff exit thanks to Jaroslav Halak and the Montreal Canadiens left an awful taste in the mouths of Bruce Boudreau’s squad, meaning improvements are in order this year for sure. (Or else?)

Southeast Division Statistical Previews by Position: Offense from the Defense

In my second statistical peek at the Southeast Division, I’ve grouped defensemen with their new clubs and will focus, this time, on offensive production from the blueline.
(Next up, we’ll re-visit the d-men from a different angle, including blocked shots, TOI and other specifics with less of an offensive emphasis.)
Remember, just as I did with the forwards, this is simply a look back at last year’s individual player statistics, updated to reflect this summer’s off-season transactions. And, as I said in that first piece, a look to the recent past can often be a good indicator of what’s to come… But not always!!!
It should also be noted, especially since I didn’t mention it with the forwards package, that rookies and European transfers (many of whom could certainly make a major impact, theoretically) are not part of this forecast.
Recall as well that for this analysis, currently unsigned, unrestricted free agents are not included, while those still unsigned but restricted are (save for Tampa’s Paul Ranger, an RFA that I have excluded intentionally, as I have little reason to believe he will return).

Elisabeth Meinecke of On Frozen Blog caught up with Mike Green when he visited Powell Elementary school in D.C. as part of the city-wide DCPS Beautification Day.
Green said his workouts this off-season have been by far the most intense of his career. Being conditioned for next year’s playoffs is already on his mind.
“Come playoff time, you’ve got to make sure you’re in shape, so I wanted to make sure I’m in the best shape possible,” Green said. “It’s been a tough summer.”...
When asked what he learned from last season that’s going to be the biggest improvement in his game this year, he talked about consistency and avoiding injury. Injuries have marred his past two post-seasons. Green also shared his thoughts on new teammate, D.J. King, and the idea of defenseman Willie Mitchell possibly being in a Caps uniform.
“I played against him when I was younger in the WHL, and he’s a big boy, so I know everybody’s exciting to have him here,” Green said of King.
On Mitchell, he said, “I think he’d be a great fit in Washington.”

Does Mike Green Win The Norris?

Canada didn’t trust Mike Green’s play in his own zone enough to include him amongst the seven defencemen chosen to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Now we ask, is Green, the NHL’s highest scoring defenceman this season, good enough to be named winner of the Norris Trophy as the best defender in the league?
This season there really is no runaway leader for the Norris, so it will likely come down to personal preference for members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association who are charged with choosing the Norris winner.

Blame Canadian Media For Mike Green’s Suspension

Alan May openly suggested this week that the Canadian media is out to spotlight transgressions by Caps players, and that this may have contributed to Green’s punishment.
“They’re always trying to poke holes in the Capitals, and it’s the same reason that Mike Green was suspended,” May said on 106.7 The Fan’s Mike Wise Show Monday afternoon, when asked about criticism of the Caps’ netminders. “I thought it was created by TSN up in Canada and their announcers, sitting there on a Friday night. The only angles they showed of the Mike Green hit were very poor angles that looked like it was a bad hit, and when you go in super-slow motion, it makes it look worse all the time. And I thought the Mike Green hit, no one even noticed it the other night. And they made a big deal, and he winds up getting three games out of it.”
The conversation moved on, but May—who is Canadian—later returned to this subject, again pounding away on the Toronto media pack.

Dmitry Kulikov & Mike Green Knee-On-Knee Hit

Washington Capitals’ defenceman Mike Green has left tonight’s game against the Florida Panthers’ with an apparent knee injury.
Green collided with Panthers’ defenceman Dmitry Kulikov with just over three minutes remaining in the second period. It appeared to be a knee-on-knee collision.
He briefly returned to the Capitals bench in the third period but left for the dressing room once again shortly thereafter.
Earlier in the game Green was involved in another incident when he appeared to nail Panthers’ forward Michael Frolik with an elbow to the head. Green received a two minute elbowing penalty on the play, however the league may well review the hit.

Mike Green’s Game Is Misunderstood

In some ways, it is about Boudreau searching for respect, and reading between the lines it seems as if Boudreau views Green’s status as being characteristic of that fact. He has taken note that Hockey Canada’s brain trust were Western Conference guys and that they leaned toward Western Conference defencemen. Just watch, he says. The Norris Trophy won’t likely go to Green, either.
Boudreau believes that Green’s game is misunderstood. Had anybody from Hockey Canada called Boudreau about Green - Boudreau says he doesn’t know if Capitals’ general manager George McPhee was ever called about Green and McPhee respectfully declined to comment - the coach would have told them Green takes risks because the team asks him to do so. The quickness he shows on offence lends itself to quick defensive recovery, too.

Koci Hit On Green

The game was marred by a major boarding penalty by Avs enforcer David Koci to star Washington defenseman Mike Green in the second period, a hit from behind that left Green down for a few minutes, bleeding from the head. Koci almost surely will face a suspension from the NHL over the hit, and Washington coach Bruce Boudreau was livid over it.
“Please, the guy’s got one goal in six years. He couldn’t play in the American League,” Boudreau said. “I’ve faced David Koci an awful lot, he might be a nice guy, I have no idea. I’m glad he’s making a living, but if this is any game, he gets on the ice for the first three minutes, he gets into his fight with the guy and then he sits at the end of the bench, so what good is he?

Will Mike Green Make Team Canada?

Completely unprovoked, Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau spent Tuesday morning lobbying for defenseman Mike Green to make the Canadian Olympic team.
“If I’m Stevie Yzerman, I’m looking at him as one of your top pair,” Boudreau said.
According to people that follow the Capitals closely, it’s the first time Boudreau has publicly made a pitch on Green’s behalf. It’s also an about face from last spring, when after the playoffs were over Boudreau admitted his disappointment in Green’s overall effort through 14 postseason games.

Mike Green Getting Back In Shape

But getting back to the Mike Green who Boudreau played more than anyone else last season first meant nursing himself back to health. Upon returning to his hometown Calgary, he began rehabilitating his injured shoulder. And instead of working on building muscle like most fourth-year professionals, Green focused on shedding the 29 pounds he’d gained during the season and adhering to a healthier diet. Poor eating habits, Green said, had not only caused his weight gain but also were to blame for the dangerously low iron levels that sapped his energy in the playoffs.
“It was a mistake he made,” Boudreau said of Green’s weight. “He let it get away from him.”
It wasn’t the first time Boudreau had seen Green pack on a significant number of pounds during a season.
“The same thing happened in Hershey,” Boudreau added. “I said, ‘Mike, you have to look after your weight.’ So he starved himself and he was so weak. So I said, ‘Mike, forget about it. Just play the way you’re playing. I don’t want you to kill yourself.’ So when he put on a few pounds last year, I wasn’t really ready to bring it up in the middle of a playoff run because I didn’t want it to affect him.”

Green Adjusting To New Stick

Mike Green broke the last of his discontinued Easton Stealths—the stick the slick-skating defenseman used to rack up 31 goals and 73 points—early in Game 1 of this series.
For the rest of that game, and the next two, Green said, “I felt like I was stickhandling for the first time again.”
“It takes a couple of games,” Green added, referring to the process of getting used to the feel of the heavier, stiffer Easton S17 stick that he’s using now. “But today I feel back to normal. It’s weird how that happens.”
“It’s a [crappy] time for that to happen,” he said with a laugh, although I could tell he didn’t really think it was funny.
