Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, The Neutral Announcer

from Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News,

The only drawback to the play-by-play stylings of Mike (Doc) Emrick is he works with two analysts.

This is like spray painting over the Mona Lisa.

When you have a virtuoso performer (in the current world of sports broadcasting you can count them on one hand), he should fly solo, especially in a frenetic-paced sport such as hockey where radio-like play-by-play on TV is a necessity.

Emrick’s wingmen on NBC, Eddie Olczyk and Pierre McGuire, apparently are aware of this. Neither is prone to jaw-jacking. They are valuable informants who figured out hockey is one televised sport in which the play-by-play man is as much a star as the analyst.

That’s why, once the Stanley Cup Final starts rolling Wednesday night, there won’t be the usual fan backlash in both cities about the “national” announcers favoring one team. Over many moons Emrick, 67, has provided an abundance of that he calls what he sees — without embellishing.

Who Made The Better Call?

from Justin Bourne of The Score,

I’m a Canadian guy living in the US, so I’m quite familiar with the work of most national broadcasters. I love Bob Cole and Harry Neal (“Great save by…the goalie!”), and usually I love Jim Hughson. Now that I’m in the US, I get a lot of Doc Emrick, who is a whole bunch of fantastic himself (“Waffleboarded into the corner by Brodeur!”).

When Anze Kopitar scored the OT winner in Game 1 it, Emrick owned the moment. You could see the play unfolding, so the announcers had time to get excited as things developed. It’s not as fun when some surprise garbage goal goes in – this one gave us the rising action and the climax.

Jim Hughson’s call on CBC wasn’t exactly electric though. He sounded like a one of the bias broadcasters that sounds openly disappointed when their team gets scored on.

Emrick’s Never Been Better

from Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated,

(Each month SI.com highlights people in the sports media who have proved newsworthy, both for positive and negative achievements. Since this column has been away the past two months, let’s call this the spring media power list)

1. Mike Emrick, NBC NHL announcer: My colleague Michael Farber calls him the preeminent lexicographer of the frozen game. I call him NBC’s Bard of Spring. With NBC airing every NHL playoff game nationally since the second round, Emrick has been a welcome visitor in homes for weeks, and at 65, he’s never been better at his craft. Losing no steam during the Rangers’ triple overtime win over the Capitals on May 3, Emrick wryly concluded, “There were three games played tonight in the NHL, two of them right here.” Sometimes we don’t give the best of the profession enough due because their daily excellence becomes expected. Emrick begins another Stanley Cup Final run Wednesday night (NBC, 8 p.m. ET). Tune in if you want to see a master word painter at work.

Emrick Will Remain Neutral

from Neil Best of Newsday,

Strange? Doc Emrick admitted that it is, at least a little.

How can it not be when you are the national voice of the NHL, but in your first season after leaving as the long-time voice of the Devils you find yourself calling their series against the Rangers, with a spot in the Stanley Cup finals at stake?

Still, Emrick insisted on two points: One, that there is nothing unique about this for him, having been involved in covering every previous Devils-Rangers series, including the epic 1994 conference final.

And two, that there will be no detectable bias in the way he calls the games on NBC and NBC Sports Network in the series, which begins Monday night.

Fine, but doesn’t he still have positive feelings about the team whose games he worked for 21 years? “Yes,’’ he said, “but it is at that point you have to absolutely turn the blinders on and be objective about what you’re seeing.’‘

Emrick Leaving The Devils, Now Exclusive With Versus/NBC

from Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick at Devils.com,

To the marvelous fans of the New Jersey Devils:

A good friend advised me several years ago that before any major decision, you should look in the mirror and look at your birth certificate.

Since my contracts with MSG, VERSUS, and NBC all expired late this spring, this was another of those times. I discovered that the birth certificate couldn’t be changed and it showed me to be 65 in a few days.

I’ve been extremely fortunate to have been able to spend 23 incredible years with the MSG Network channels and 21 equally enjoyable years—including 3 Stanley Cup championships—with the New Jersey Devils.  However, considering the long-term significance of this decision, I was able to construct a lighter regular season-schedule and the usual complement of Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final games for NBC and VERSUS.

But that assurance of less travel and fewer games has regrettably led me to end my association with the MSG Network channels and the Devils.

‘Doc’ Emrick Calls 3000th Game

from Michelle Crechiolo at DetroitRedWings.com,

Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, who is synonymous with hockey broadcasting, will reach another milestone on Monday when he calls his 3,000th professional men’s hockey game on Versus when the Red Wings host Pittsburgh at Joe Louis Arena.

As a Michigander, Emrick couldn’t be happier that his milestone will be in Hockeytown, because about 40 of his friends and relatives, including his veterinarian and his accountant, will get to celebrate the achievement with him in person.

“It just worked out that way,” said Emrick, who lives with his wife, Joyce, in St. Clair, Michigan, which is northeast of Detroit. “I told my wife about 10 days ago, we planned this day last summer. And I thought, it’s going to be give-or-take, it’s going to be around 3,000 when the game is held, but it came right out on and you never would have thought that. It’ll be kind of a special night.

“We have a couple of relatives flying out for it and then everybody else is in the area. It’ll be nice to have 40 of them all in one place.”

No ‘Doc’ Tomorrow

from Puck The Media,

This news coming via an NBC Press Release:

CHICAGO — Dec. 31, 2008 — Hall of Fame broadcaster “Doc” Emrick will be unable to call tomorrow’s NHL Winter Classic due to laryngitis. Dave Strader, who is the play-by-play voice of the Phoenix Coyotes and has also worked for NBC Sports, will fill in for Emrick.

“Last year’s game was a lifetime memory and I couldn’t wait to call this year’s game at Wrigely,” said Emrick. “I’m extremely disappointed but I know Dave will do a wonderful job.”

Emrick Goes To The HHOF

from John McGourty of NHL.com,

On the eve of his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Emrick reflected on his career that began with announcing parts of games at Bowling Green University, where he got his doctorate in radio-television-film. Hence, the nickname. He had been teaching near Pittsburgh and was looking to get his doctorate.

“I was considering going to Michigan or Bowling Green for my doctorate and Bowling Green University had the local NPR station with All Things Considered and their usual shows,” Emrick said. “They had a staff member who broadcast the first and third periods and they felt a student should do the second period.

“That’s what Bowling Green offered me that Michigan could not. That made it pretty easy to make up my mind.”
