All Hal Gill And Paul Gaustad On The NHL Proposal

from Josh Cooper of Predators Insider at the Tennessean,

Below are some thoughts on the NHL’s latest collective bargaining proposal by Predators defenseman Hal Gill and forward Paul Gaustad. Both have been two of the more informed, and opinionated, Nashville players on the matter throughout the process.

Is this the framework of a deal?

(Gill): “I think it is a framework. Obviously we’re not happy with the percentage, but there are some other things that are good about it. And like I said, I don’t have the lawyer speak and fine print the lawyers have to look over and explain to us, but it looks like something that is workable and something that maybe we’re a little closer to being on the same page.”

What is your take on the proposal?

(Gaustad): “I think it’s a positive thing. The proposal is a good thing and that talks are continuing. What Don (Fehr) said the other day is correct that you have to take time to digest it and look over it and see what the best thing is for the players in the league. It’s always good that talks are continuing and a proposal is out there. I think today they’re dissecting it and guys are talking. Overall, I think guys view it as positive that there is a proposal.”

Gill Signs, What About Suter?

In late May, Dave Stubbs of Hockey Inside/Out posted a Q & A with Hal Gill.  One of the questions…

Are you expecting to talk contract with the Predators before the July 1 UFA period kicks in?

I think we’ll talk more coming up, I’d like to hear what (Poile) has to say. Right now they’re thinking about (UFA defenceman Ryan) Suter. If they don’t get Suter, it’s going to be a different ball game. If they lock him up, I think everything falls into place. I think that’s kinda what they’re looking at.

You would think the Predators would wait to sign Gill if they thought they still had a chance to sign Suter. But today’s signing of Gill may be the handwriting on the wall.

All Hal Gill

from Dave Stubbs of Hockey Inside/Out,

The prevailing sentiment is that the Canadiens have turned an important corner in their rebuilding with the hiring of Marc Bergevin as general manager to replace Pierre Gauthier. The Gauthier era was confounding, to say the least. What was your take on it?

(Almost 15 minutes of Gill’s reply was off the record. What follows was on the record.)

I think the way Pierre ran the team is what they’d teach you in business school about managing people. I think he went by the book, that that was kinda the funny thing (given the nature of a hockey team). … I’d ask Pierre every day why we had to do things a certain way, kinda have fun with it. But he didn’t mix very well with the team so communication was different. He’s a different person.

In Nashville, I’d go to (GM) David Poile, who’s the nicest man, so up front, and he’d say, “We’re all in this together, what should we do? Do you have any ideas? Do you think we handled this situation right?” It was a different world. I think Bergevin is going to be great. I don’t know his track record after his playing days, but as a player he was a first-rate beauty, a clown. … I think it’s going the right way in Montreal. I hope it is.

What Does Hal Gill Bring To Nashville?

from Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette,

His mentorship last season of rookie defenceman P.K. Subban was incalculable. On the rink, when paired with Subban, Gill was the fallback, dependable steed when his partner, a frisky colt, strayed or got into trouble; off the ice, Gill helped teach Subban how to be a professional.

Now Gill takes those qualities to Nashville to nurture young players there, being counted upon to guide them toward the Western Conference playoffs.

That’s exactly what he was told Friday in Detroit by Predators GM David Poile and head coach Barry Trotz.

“They told me what they expected of me and it’s pretty much in my wheelhouse, so to speak,” Gill said. “Kill penalties, try to be a shutdown defenceman and be a leader in a young locker room. That sounds like something I’m comfortable doing and I hope I can help out.”

Surely he’ll lift the Nashville penalty-kill higher than its current No. 16 ranking?

“I hope so,” Gill said, laughing again. “That’s the plan. I always say, it doesn’t matter what your (kill) percentage is, if you give up four goals but you’re up 6-5 and you kill the penalty in the last minute, then the PK won the game. You look at it case by case. Hopefully, we’ll have some big games coming down the stretch and into the playoffs. Hopefully, our PK can help win games.”

Captain Gionta

Brian Gionta is the 28th captain of your Montreal Canadiens, becoming the second American captain in the team’s 101 year history. Chris Chelios, who co-captained the team in 1989, was the first.

Hal Gill and Andrei Markov will remain assistant captains.

That so many names were bandied about by the media is a sign of the leadership and experience in the locker room. But any way you look at it, Gionta is a great choice.
