Surprised David Poile Was Surprised
by Paul on 07/11/12 at 10:32 PM ET

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province at the Calgary Herald,
Seriously, how can he be surprised? Suter had been on his way to unrestricted free agency for well more than a year and had rebuffed every previous attempt the Preds had made to re-sign him. The newspapers for more than two months were absolutely full of stories speculating whether it would be Detroit or Pittsburgh or any other team which would land the services of Suter. The Red Wings had more than $20 million US cap space at the time and had just lost Nick Lidstrom.
How in the world could Poile have been ‘surprised’ when shortly after July 1, Suter left the Predators? Had he been in one of those mountain caves in Pakistan trying to stay away from drone attacks? Had he been in a comma for more than a year?
Nobody was surprised. And to be perfectly blunt, it doesn’t matter what Suter or Suter’s agent had been telling them. If he’s not signed coming up to the deadline, you’re in deep doo-doo pal! You’ve been a general manager in this league for 30 years and seen this happen like clockwork every season since free agency existed. What could possibly have come as a surprise?

Predators Extend Contract Of GM Poile
by Paul on 02/20/12 at 07:23 PM ET

Nashville, Tenn. (February 20, 2012) – The only General Manager in franchise history and the only one to be a finalist for the NHL GM of the Year Award in each of the last two seasons, David Poile, has been awarded a contract through the 2014-15 season, announced Predators’ Chairman Tom Cigarran today. Poile also announced an extension of Assistant General Manager Paul Fenton.
“Today’s announcement is further recognition by the Predators’ ownership group of the outstanding job David has done as President of Hockey Operations since the franchise’s inception,” Cigarran said. “The consistent success of the Predators on the ice is directly attributed to his ability to assemble and lead a team of management, coaches, scouts and administrators who continually identify, draft, develop and motive an exceptional group of experienced and young players. The ownership group believes that under his leadership, the Nashville Predators will soon achieve its goal of winning the Stanley Cup.”

“Our first and foremost goal is to sign Ryan. We’ve been trying to do that all season long. I’ve not accomplished that to this point, but we’re hoping to continue discussions and get that done at some point. We’ll be prepared, if we feel that we weren’t going to be able to sign Ryan, and if we thought we were in a position that we had to or should trade him. I’m certainly hoping that doesn’t happen, I don’t want that to happen, but I want to be prepared for that.”

Poile Signs One-Year Contract
by Paul on 04/17/09 at 10:28 PM ET

from John Glennon of the Tennessean,
Predators general manager David Poile said Friday he’s agreed to a new one-year contract through June of 2010.
Last summer Poile decided to sign year-to-year contracts as a safeguard against unforeseen circumstances like ownership change. His current contract would have expired this June….
“I’ve been here since day one and to me, it’s a little unfinished business,’’ Poile said. “At different times I’ve felt we were really close, especially a couple years ago and then that went (downhill) with Craig selling the team.
“So the last two years under new ownership, we’ve made a commitment to sign some of our existing players and we’ve drafted real well. It’s my goal and hope that we’re not too far away from being a top team again — getting this thing right, making Nashville a hockey city and winning some playoff rounds, getting a Stanley Cup.’’

NHL and Predators Respond to Radulov Situation
by Alanah McGinley on 07/11/08 at 07:12 PM ET

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile issued the following statement regarding reports that Alexander Radulov has signed a contract to play in Russia…
“Alex is under contract with the Nashville Predators through the 2008-09 season. We are looking forward to him being here for training camp and being a part of this franchise’s success for years to come.”
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly issued the following statement in response to questions regarding the Alexander Radulov reports:
“It is our understanding, based on the representations made both at our meeting yesterday, but also at an earlier meeting with Mr. Medvedev in May, that the Russian League will not allow a player to play in violation of his contractual obligations in the NHL.”

Poile Thinking One Year At A Time
by Paul on 06/20/08 at 09:44 AM ET

from John Glennon of the Tennessean,
Predators General Manager David Poile said he’s decided to renew his contract on an annual basis instead of signing any more multiyear deals, but it doesn’t mean he has other jobs in mind….
Poile said he doesn’t envision leaving the Predators but wants flexibility in case of unforeseen circumstances such as a change of ownership.
“I at least wouldn’t be tied into someone long term,’’ he said. “I’d rather be happy and motivated than in a situation where I wasn’t happy, or people were not happy with me.’‘

On the Ice, Nashville’s in Good Shape
by Alanah McGinley on 06/08/08 at 04:49 PM ET

From Aaron Portzline at Puck-rakers in the Columbus Dispatch:
David Poile is the NHL’s quiet genius.
Last summer, when the Nashville Predators were being purged in advance of a franchise sale and possible relocation, Poile, the general manager, was forced to orchestrate nothing short of a fire sale.
It was the most painful time in his professional career, parting with lots of players he either drafted (Scott Hartnell, Scottie Upshall, Ryan Parent) or signed as little-known free agents (Tomas Vokoun, Kimmo Timonen, etc.).
Poile, though, emerged with enough building blocks in place to carry on. He made smart trades and got commodities in return. He signed bargain-basement free agents to fill out the roster, and he continued to stress drafting and development.

Poile Made The Right Moves
by Paul on 04/07/08 at 10:21 AM ET

from the Daily News Journal,
The Nashville Predators’ mad dash to the finish, which resulted in a fourth consecutive playoff berth, has made general manager David Poile the leading candidate — in the eyes of many — for Executive of the Year, and understandably so.
Keep in mind, though, the team that Poile cobbled together this season is not the one he wanted. The uncertainty and financial restrictions that preceded the sale of the franchise forced his hand with regard to players such as Scott Hartnell, Kimmo Timonen and Tomas Vokoun, all of whom were traded, as well as Paul Kariya and Peter Forsberg, free agents who walked with no effort having been made to re-sign them.

from the National Post,
“You know, for 365 days, we have ‘GMs 101’ down pat,” (Nashville GM David) Poile joked. “But for that one day we do things we shouldn’t do.”
Why do GMs tend to wait right until deadline day to make those big deals? “Because we don’t want to do it,” he said.
