Chris Stewart Raises His Compete Level

from Dan O'Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

“You just have to worry about competing for your teammates and really bearing down. When you do those little things, that’s when you get that room in the offensive zone to make that move. I think that’s one of the best things that has hit home in my career for me.”

Stewart has realized the means can justify the ends. He has focused on the process and the production has come complimentary.

“What we’re trying to do with Stewie is change his value system, and he’s really starting to embrace that now,” Hitchcock said. “You can still be a good player in the game and not get points. You can still have an impact, even though you don’t score.

“It’s about not playing the game looking to score, but playing the game looking to compete and know that when you have a high skill level, like Stewie does, there’s going to be times when you score. But don’t drop your competitive base. Don’t base everything on points.”

Avs/Blues Trade While Many Of Us Were Sleeping

from TSN,

The St. Louis Blues have traded defenceman Erik Johnson, forward Jay McClement and a conditional first-round draft pick to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Chris Stewart, rookie defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk and a conditional second-round draft pick.

The draft picks could be used in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, but there are conditions that could change that. If the Blues end up with a Top-10 draft selection, they can choose to transfer their 2012 pick instead. If that occurs, the Avalanche will also send their 2012 second-round pick to the Blues instead of their 2011 pick.

Chris Stewart Breaks His Hand In A Needless Fight

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,

If Chris Stewart, the Avalanche’s leading goal-scorer and rising star, hadn’t suffered a broken left hand in a second-period fight during Colorado’s 7-4 rout of Minnesota on Saturday night at the Pepsi Center, Greg Mauldin would have been the story — and a very heartening one at that.

But because Stewart’s willingness to drop the gloves and throw punches proved to be costly, his injury stole much of the attention.

“Chris fractured his hand,” Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said after the game. “He’ll be re-evaluated in the morning, and we’ll know more.”

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/29/10

This morning’s salute to the top three stars from last night’s NHL contests:

***Cheers to Jaroslav Halak of the St. Louis Blues, who stopped 24 shots in Nashville to top the Predators, handing the home club their first regulation loss of the season. This was Halak’s second consecutive shutout, after blanking Pittsburgh on Saturday and the former Montreal Canadien now boasts a scoreless streak of 151:15 dating back to a second period goal by Chicago’s Brent Seabrook last Friday. So far this year, Halak is certainly proving that last season’s playoff success was no fluke, with a 1.55 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage.

Colorado Signs Chris Stewart

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed restricted free-agent forward Chris Stewart to a two-year contract through the 2011-12 season.

Stewart, 22, led Colorado with 28 goals and finished second on the team in scoring with 64 points in 77 games last season.  Stewart, who scored 25 of his 28 goals at even strength, also paced the Avalanche in both game-winning goals (5) and shots (221).  The Toronto native was +4 for the season and added 100 hits and 73 penalty minutes.  Stewart went on to lead the Avalanche with three goals (3g/0a) in six playoff games.

“We are pleased to have Chris Stewart under contract,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.  “Chris was one of our top offensive players last season and we look forward to seeing him build on what he started a year ago.”
