Kukla's Korner Hockey

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
At the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas where the NHL awards show was housed last week, there was a Penske Maserati dealership outside the front doors.
The sticker price on the vehicles was, well, several gulps. You will probably be able to say the same for the two shiniest free agents, Ryan Suter and Zach Parise, when they come on the market on Sunday.
Suter and Parise are the great rides with all the horsepower. The rest of the free agents in the showroom are somewhere between a nice comfortable drive and a beater. For every Shane Doan, there’s a Krys Barch. For every Martin Brodeur, we give you Justin Pogge. There are guys like Dustin Penner and Alex Semin who look good, just not every day. You’d think twice about giving them a long-term contract.
To change metaphors, it’s a wading pool of free agents — very shallow, although the New Jersey Devils lifer Brodeur is dipping his toe into the tank. Phoenix Coyotes’ Doan is available because the soap-opera ownership situation has him testing the waters. So is Ray Whitney, who made the NHL second all-star team at 40.
