Wings Searched For a Top-Six Forward

from Jim Parker of the Windsor Star,

Holland admits he tried to add another forward to the team.

“I’d like to add a top-six forward, but so would every other team in the league,” Holland said. “When free agency started, we wanted to add a guy like Dan Cleary. A good, two-way forward and we explored free agency, but came up short on a few (players) either in dollars or length of term.”

The Red Wings pursued both Thomas Fleischmann and Scottie Upshall, who both signed with Florida.

While the club didn’t add experience, Holland is now $6 million US under the cap, which can be used to address any shortcomings at forward later.

“I think we can compete and I like our cap space,” Holland said. “If, after 60 games and we get to the (trade) deadline and are in a playoff position, we can make a deal (because of cap space). We haven’t had that the last couple of years.”

It would be closer to $8 million without Hudler. That’s some walkin around money!

If they’re in a playoff position. Oh, that crazy Tick Tock. He has such a wicked sense of humor, doesn’t he? smile

Did anyone else notice when Holland was pointing to the youth on the roster, that he mentioned just about everyone 27 and younger except… Hudler? Some kind of Freudian slip, perhaps?

Yes.  I am sure it was completely by “accident”....................
