Wings Get Favorable Calls?

from Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald,

One day — and heaps of deserved criticism — later, Curtis Glencross was still fussing about the call.

In Wednesday’s third period against the home-ice Detroit Red Wings, Glencross had been whistled for a retaliatory chop on Henrik Zetterberg.

The resulting minor gave the Wings a two-man advantage, on which they capitalized. The hosts added another goal just as Glencross was stepping onto the ice to cap their 5-3 triumph over the Calgary Flames.

“It’s obvious we were in Detroit because the ref missed the first one on them and called the second one,” said Glencross, who, with Anaheim’s Corey Perry and Carolina’s Tuomo Ruutu, tops the National Hockey League with four slashing minors. “If we were playing any other team in the league, they probably wouldn’t have called it.”

What a tool. If you were a Wings fan for that stretch or loses recently you probaly saw 10 weak calls at the minimum. He was penelized for doing exactly what the penelty was for. *#$%@& whiner.

I think just about any fan of any team could make the same argument about any building. The difference is they are FANS. This pathetic response from Glencross speaks volumes about why Calgary loses! This is a statement from a child with a losers mentality steeped in a culture of losing! I think its hilarious that the article goes on to say “In fact, they’ve been shorthanded just 72 times. To put that into perspective, only five squads — Florida, San Jose, Phoenix, Chicago, New York Islanders — have deployed their penalty-killers less often than the Flames.” Sounds to me like they have received some pretty fair treatment from the refs so far this year. Hmm whats that saying about a gift horses mouth? Also kind of funny how the rest of the team didn’t chime in to confirm what he said.

Against how many teams would the refs have called Tanguay’s dive less than two minutes after another of your players went to the box for the same infraction?

FTHW called it exactly right - this is inappropriate whining from a dirty player that would be totally fine if he were a fan. I teach high school and sometimes I catch violators of certain rule infractions. I don’t catch them all, and that’s not what I’m there for. When a kid says “but other kids were doing it right before me,” I remind them that when a person gets pulled over for speeding, the “other cars passed me a minute ago” defense doesn’t work.

Bitching about refs making preferential calls is the sole domain of fans.

So you already think Detroit gets the benefit of the doubt on all calls, yet you still give Z a retaliatory chop. Late in the 3rd.  Of a tie game.  While already shorthanded. You would think you would know that call was gonna be made, and therefore restrain yourself…...unless you are a complete d/a who doesn’t understand simple logic!

I would counter Glencross’s little ditty with a reminder of just how many goals the Wings have waived off all the freakin’ time.  I’d remind him how goalies run into Homer on purpose, fall down on purpose, and get the call they want.  I’d also remind him how moments before that chop, Zetterberg was blatantly held/interfered with against the boards, and no call was made.  I would say Calgary was given plenty of leeway in that game.

Looking to Canadian media for an intelligent, unbiased report on hockey is like asking the Taliban for an intelligent, unbiased take on women’s rights, it just ain’t gonna happen.

You’re right.  You can only find intelligent, unbiased hockey talk from people like Pierre McGuire and Adrian Dater.
