Will Ovechkin And Semin Play ‘Chip It In’ Hockey?

from Chuck Gormley of CSNWashington,

Today, when the Capitals are asked about the importance of Ovechkin and Semin staying within Dale Hunter’s chip and chase system – like they did in Wednesday night’s 4-1 win over the New York Rangers – they can’t stress enough the value of doing it the right way, and not necessarily their way.

“Ultimately, if we want to win a Stanley Cup we need them going,” Jason Chimera said. “I think they know that.

“We gave the fans a glimpse of what we could be. Everyone else can be going, but if those two guys are not going our team is pretty useless.

“We can chip in goals but those guys can score almost when they want to when they’re playing that good. It was nice to see that (Wednesday) night and they got a lot of praise from a lot of guys.”

Semin had his first two-goal game of the season and Ovechkin assisted on both tallies, proving that when they play well in the defensive zone, the offensive opportunities will come.

Good luck getting the mule (Ovechkin) and the Airhead (Semin) to keep it up game after game, week after week for an entire season…This team also needs secondary scorers with potential to live up to their ability. I’m speaking of Cody Eakin, Marcus Johansson and Mathieu Perrault. But all of them need enough consistent playing time in order to develop. If they really aren’t the answer to Washington’s year and a half long scoring woes, then Dale Hunter should bite the bullet and trade them for players who can score when the two Alex’s don’t…
