Who Columbus Wanted From The Rangers

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Maybe Scott Howson read the standings upside down. Maybe the Blue Jackets general manager thought his team was first overall in the NHL rather than 30th, and maybe he thought the Rangers were last instead of first in the Eastern Conference and first in the league in points-per-game.

Perhaps that explains why Howson acted with a sense of entitlement through his negotiations regarding Rick Nash with Rangers GM Glen Sather, who lusted after the power winger to such an extent he is believed to have offered the Blue Jackets a five-asset package including Brandon Dubinsky, 21-year-old top defense prospect Tim Erixon, highly regarded 2011 first-round draft choice J.T. Miller and 2010 second-round pick Christian Thomas, along with a 2012 first-round selection in order to make it happen as yesterday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline approached.

There is a difference though between lusting and sinning, the latter the impulse Sather ultimately resisted by rejecting Howson’s laughable demand the package include Dubinsky — plus either Ryan McDonagh or Michael Del Zotto — plus either Derek Stepan or Carl Hagelin — plus 2009 first-rounder Chris Kreider, the Boston College winger who conceivably could join the Rangers when his college season ends — plus a 2012 first-round selection.

IF that is what Howson asked for (Don’t get me wrong, that’s a lot to part with) but I don’t see anything wrong with that as a starting point and possibly negotiating down from there. Nash is Columbus’ franchise (obviously they value him more than another organization might), if you’re going to get fair value you need to ask for some cornerstones to rebuild the franchise on.

I think far too often players of his talent are traded away for uncertainty and less than value…  it really hurts the team who is trading (Atlanta/Winnipeg- Kovalchuk/Hossa. Boston-Thornton. Pittsburgh-Jagr). Howson was trying to get an impact return for his impact player, I don’t see it as such a bad thing as Brooks. Objective I guess, it’s all relative.

Dubinsky is a 3rd Line C with a pretty big Salary if I remember Correctly

& Senile Brooks is a Moron, He said all the time the Rangers were the ONLY team in the Jagr sweepstakes & was SHOCKED when he was traded to The Caps

The deal the Rangers had much quantity, but 2nd tier quality - an out of favor second line center, this year’s 1st rounder in the 25-30 range, and three good but not top-line prospects for an all-star forward.  The Rangers weren’t giving up anybody that the fans had an attachment to.

Howson did what he had to do..

What does Brooks want?  Because the Rangers are first THEY should get some sort of favor from the last place Blue Jackets?

That’s a pile of crap.

Nash is a top tier power forward.  Dubinsky (overpaid) and Del Zotto/McDonagh are not top tier guys, none of the other guys are good enough yet to help the Jackets.  If the Rangers go deep, the pick becomes almost like a 2nd round choice.

Howson will get the assets he wants for Nash, clearly he’s not buying what the Rangers are selling.

I really don’t think Howson wanted to make the trade, but was willing to see if he could get a goldmine for a gold nugget. If Nash is still in Cbus this time next year, we can be assured that he’ll never be sold to another team.

Larry Brooks is a first class goofball.  A few years back I asked him if he really believes the garbage he writes or if it was expected of him to be salacious.  He was offended that I would ask.  We had a long winded email conversation.  Trust me, he is certifiable.  Watching his antics with Torts only confirmed such.

No way I make that propose trade. Howson is clearly inept at dealing with the media, but he’s not a moron. What sense of entitlement do the rangers deserve, my word?  A package of uncertainty for a franchise forward? Larry Brooks is the Perez Hilton of hockey: utterly clueless, in the bag for stars and hopelessly grasping for ratification of his dementia.

Yes, he is.  Time and time again, he’s proven he’s a moron.  A complete and utter moron, one that is incapable of making smart hockey decisions.

In this one case though, as redxblack said, he was simply going way over the top (which had to be clear even to him) to see if he couldn’t strike it rich.

I got into an email battle with him too & He stopped replying when I pointed out he was wrong on Jagr to the Rags. Said something to the effect of “So How was that Jagr to Rags from Pens trade”
