Darren Dreger of TSN answers some email,
Has there been any word on the situation with Zach Parise and the New Jersey Devils? I believe as of January 1 he’s eligible to sign a new contract with them? If unsigned he will be the best trade bait available at the trade deadline - especially if the Devils lost the tight race for a playoff spot in the East!
Dreger: There is no question the Devils will be faced with a very difficult decision at trade deadline. Parise in so many ways is the cornerstone of this franchise and the Devils appreciate that and want very much to re-sign him. However, with unresticted free agency looming these situations are always delicate because the player (Parise) wants to be fair to the organization, but also wants to test the market, primarily to see which of the true contenders surface among the multiple bidders that will undoubtedly express considerable interest. This isn’t about money. Zach Parise will get his money either from New Jersey or the open market. At this stage, not much has changed…Parise wants to wait, focus on the season and helping the Devils secure a playoff spot. However, in the coming weeks Lou Lamoriello will have to decide whether he can afford to continue to play the waiting game and risk his captain and star player walking in July, or Lamoriello will have to embrace the feeding frenzy and trade offers that will increase in value in the weeks leading up to the deadline.
