Video- Backstrom’s Match Penalty

Niklas Backstrom received a match penalty at the end of the game tonight for this cross-check on Rich Peverley.

A match penalty is an automatic suspension until ruled upon, which I am sure will be sometime tomorrow.

Update: Here’s a better video from The Score:

ESPN Boston’s Joe Haggerty reports that Bruins coach Claude Julien isn’t exactly happy with the Capitals’ stick issues:

“The only thing that’s disappointing for me personally is that this is the third time in three games our player has been cross-checked in the face. ... You hope that those things don’t get out of hand,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said. “Somebody else, not us, has to deal with that.”

Kinda looks like he went to cross check him at his shoulders and his stick rode up Peverly’s… still a stupid idea by Backstrom.

And remind me how this is worse than what Weber did and didn’t get a match penalty for?

Not much of a match penalty. Beer leagues every night have worse than that.

Really, that was a match penalty? The only reason Peverly got cross-checked in the face is because he was late with his cross-check attempt. They both are primed for cross-checking the other in the chest. Non-issue, no supplemental discipline.

Weber precedent, he gets to be $2500 lighter but that’s it.

If this had happened to any other play than a Boston Bruin some would be crying that the book needs to be thrown at Backstrom but since it was a Bruins, I guess it’s ok right?

The NHL already suspended a guy once this year for intending to hit a guy in the chest with his stick and accidentally catching him in the face instead.

But, since it’s the playoffs and apparently one playoff game is the equivalent of 11 regular season games (waaaaaaaaaank), I don’t think Backstrom will get anything more than the ol’ $2,500 tap on the dick.

You’re preaching to the choir. It’s not ok, but you have Shanny to thank for this mess.  (See Weber gets away with assault on Zetterberg) The snowball effect has begun.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

This is on the weak side of match penalties considering the Backstrom probably couldn’t hurt a fly, but the nonsense has been escalating and you never know which officials are calling which game and what the standard is going to be.

Its simple though, don’t use the stick as a weapon even if you are frustrated. If the league let the one game suspension stand I wouldn’t be opposed to it. Then again I don’t have a dog in this hunt either. This is where you could consider some leeway since he isn’t a prior offender but, on the other hand doing this after the game could lead to a disaster.  You have a rule for the match penalty in place and there is really no justification to rescind it.

#1 Did he get hurt? nope.
#2 Did his helmet break in 2 or 3 spots? nope.
#3 Would suspending Backstrom have an outcome on the series? yup.
#4 Is Backstrom a bum? nope.
#5 Does Backstrom have a history? nope.

Sannadouche: “After shampooing some dicks I have decided to suspend Backstrom for 1/8 of a game and he has to buy the Bruins lunch. Since the match penalty was called I will honor that, but in the playoffs you have to look at things over a 7 game stretch as opposed to 80+ games, hence 1/8 instead of a full game. Get over here Gary, I love it when you rub your hairless balls in my face. gobble, gobble, gobble, gurgle.”
