Kukla's Korner Hockey

from Kevin Allen of USA Today,
What the game means: Because it’s October, there’s probably not much big picture impact. But the game is meaningful to the Capitals from the standpoint of measuring themselves against a traditional powerhouse. They have made enough changes in the offseason and probably can’t be sure who they are quite yet. A 7-0 start, including a victory against Detroit, would give them a bushel of confidence. Meanwhile, Detroit veterans are a proud bunch, and they will turn up the volume because that’s what they always do in big games.
Washington’s story line in 2011-12: The Capitals were an offensive team with defensive deficiencies two seasons ago, and last season they were strong defensively and their offense, particularly their power play, wasn’t as strong. This season, their hope was to find the right balance beween a dominant offense and strong defense.
Detroit’s story line in 2011-12: Last season, the Red Wings were not as effective in their own end as they historically have been. Their objective this season has been to clean up their defensive coverage.
