Too Many Home Games

from Ken Warren of Senators Extra at the Ottawa Citizen,

The holiday headache belongs to the folks trying to sell tickets to watch those players during the heavy slate of games at Scotiabank Place during the busiest – and most expensive – month of the year.

You could label it the “11 Days of Hockey Christmas.” Beginning with tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Senators will play 11 home games in the next 31 days. The Tampa Bay game kicks off a span of five games at Scotiabank Place in the next 12 days. There are nine games here before New Year’s. Holy hockey. That’s a lot of puck action for the most die-hard NHL fan, even at the best of times.

Now factor in the seasonal issues. Come December, the boxes on all of our calendars fill up fast. We’re reaching for our wallets more often. Does the following sound familiar? Find the perfect tree. Put up the lights. Go to the work party. Drop in at the neighbour’s get-together. Spend time with extended family. Don’t dare miss the kid’s school pageant or that piano recital. And my personal favourite: shopping in the malls.

To be perfectly honest, this was one of the reasons I stopped my season tickets with the Flyers. The schedule always had 2 or 3 periods where it was a week or two worth of home games almost every other night. When you are the sole owner of season tickets, it almost forces you to sell some games just so you’re not paying for parking/tolls to get to the game. At least with the Flyers, the cost of the toll, parking, and just getting something to snack/drink was almost as much as one of my seat’s price. Four or five games in a row and that adds up real quick. When I split my tickets with 3 others, it wasn’t a big deal because it meant we’d probably all go during that stretch.

In Ottawa you have the additional difficulty of an Arena located in the Suburbs.

I’m already seeing a lot of reduced price tickets becoming available this month - the team itself is already offering half price tickets to most games, and you could probably do even better from re-sellers.
