The Lying Issue In Toronto

from the CP at The Hockey News,

Tensions are on the rise between the Toronto Maple Leafs and reporters who cover the team.

Brian Burke came out in defence of coach Ron Wilson on his Twitter account late Sunday night after Wilson endured criticism for starting James Reimer for Saturday’s 4-1 loss in Boston.

“I love the quote about the liars in sports,” wrote Burke. “Many gainfully employed in the media.”

Wilson was accused of lying after indicating that Jonas Gustavsson would start against the Bruins following Friday’s practice. Instead, he chose to give Reimer his first action since the goaltender suffered concussion-like symptoms after a collision with Habs captain Brian Gionta on Oct. 22.

The general manager indicated Wilson simply had a change of heart.

What a joke.  All I heard from the media all week was, “Why isn’t Wilson starting Reimer against Boston?  Doesn’t he know we need our best goalie to have a chance against them?  If Reimer’s healthy enough to serve as the backup, he’s healthy enough to start!  If Wilson doesn’t start him, he’s not doing a very good job!”

I was actually mildly surprised to see Reimer in goal on Saturday, simply because I figured that if the Leafs won, the media would conclude that it was all thanks to their invaluable advice, which Wilson dutifully heeded.

Now that they lost, of course, Wilson was lying all along!!!

I swear, the media (and in particular, those who cover hockey and call Toronto home) are some of the most petty and self-serving individuals I’ve ever had the displeasure to encounter.  REPORT the news, you imbiciles, instead of constantly trying to MAKE it!

Do you imagine that the viewing public is of the opinion that YOU have greater credibility that Ron Wilson?  That YOU would do a better job of running the team?

Allow me to deliver a newsflash to you.  You work COVERING the team because you and your hockey skills are NOT DEEMED ADEQUATE by those who own NHL franchises (or minor league ones, for that matter) to secure a coaching job of your own.

Oh, you used to play the game, did you?  So what?  Most of the employees in any company you’d care to name are woefully equipped to RUN said company.

Your past experience in the locker room and at ice level can provide interesting insights, but no more than that.

Even if you were RIGHT that Wilson was being deliberately misleading about who would start (and I seriously doubt that you were), again, so what???  Never heard of gamesmanship?  Never heard of a coach who wants to keep the opponent guessing?  What ON EARTH makes you feel like YOU are so important that he would feel the need to mislead you?  You don’t matter nearly that much.

Get over yourselves.

Oh, and by the way, I don’t know any of the Leafs brass personally, and I’m not a family member, either, so I have no ulterior motives in writing any of this.  I’m just a guy who’s sick and tired of listening to a bunch of hogwash from a group of self-important blowhards, when all I really want is to hear about the game.

The Toronto media cesspool strikes again. They have shown themselves to be completely unreliable when it comes to information. If it has a toronto newspaper by line you can pretty much discount the story from the start. As the headline says there is a “lying problem in Toronto” and it comes from the media.
