It is the unlikeliest Stanley Cup final. After all, the last time the No.8 seed was the betting favourite heading into the last round of the NHL playoffs was well… never seems just about right.
But the Los Angeles Kings aren’t the real turnaround story as the curtain gets set to rise Wednesday in lovely downtown Newark.
The home team, the New Jersey Devils, a sixth seed and yet the Eastern Conference champions, may be the most stunning rags-to-riches story in the modern history of the NHL.
Just over a year ago, on Jan. 8, 2011—which also happened to be the midpoint of the 82-game regular season—the Devils were the not-so-proud owners of a 10-29-2 record.
That adds up to 22 points. In 41 games. Twenty. Two. There’s bad starts, and disastrous starts. The Devils’ was worse.
But if New Jersey can win their fourth Stanley Cup they will have achieved a unique feat:
