Kukla's Korner Hockey

The Best Hockey In Years

from Jamie Samuelsen at the Detroit Free Press,

In the history of professional sports, I’m not sure there’s ever been a more disliked figure than NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. It doesn’t help that he looks and talks like a weasel. It doesn’t help that he has all the arrogance and smugness of NBA commissioner David Stern even though he’s made his game worse during his near two decades of power. And it doesn’t help that we live in Detroit and have been the victims of nearly every one of his silly decisions that supposedly make the sport better, but make things worse for Red Wing Nation.

So I come here not to praise Bettman because he had nothing to do with the fact that the Stanley Cup playoffs have been phenomenal up to this point. But I also can’t bash him and that takes some serious restraint. While the NBA has slogged through the first round and given us injury after injury, blowout after blowout and slugfest after slugfest, the NHL has provided us with the most entertaining month of hockey in years.

He lost me at “Pierre McGuire is as good as any analyst in sports.”

Seriously, this guy clearly knows as little about hockey as I know about the NBA.  Baring the Caps/Rangers series, the playoffs this year have been a snooze fest, including the Wings/Preds series.  Thats what happens when so many teams that rely solely on amazing goaltending make it to the playoffs.  Can’t wait until we get 2 more teams so we can water down the team-by-team offensive talent even further.

The upsetting thing is an estimated 30% of playoff games have been decided by the on and off ice officiating.  From BS penalties to missed penalites, to BS suspensions to no suspensions AND no penalty EITHER!

The clutching and grabbing are back, resulting in closer games, yet more boring ones, making the goalies look godlike.

Wrong

Sure, there have been some interesting story lines, but that doesn’t mean it’s been the best month of hockey in years. Pretty far from it.

If this is the year that clutch and grab hockey comes back, shouldn’t fate and the hockey gods decree the Devils win the championship?  It fits.

That’s right, kiddies.  Hop a plain for Vegas and remember who gave you this tip!

Couldn’t disagree more.  The playoffs have mostly featured terrible hockey.  One of the WORST Playoffs in years…
