NEW YORK (Nov. 17, 2011)—Longtime NHL player Stephane Quintal, a defenseman who played in more than 1,000 games over a 16-year career, is joining the NHL Department of Player Safety as a Manager, the National Hockey League announced today.
Quintal, 43, joins the Player Safety group that is under the direction of Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan.
“I am delighted that Stephane will be joining the Department of Player Safety,” Shanahan said. “Stephane was a physical defenseman who played the game with great passion and intensity. His insight and his ability to articulate our views will be a great asset to our department.”
The Boucherville, Quebec native was a first-round selection, 14th overall, by the Boston Bruins in the 1987 NHL Draft. He went on to record
243 points (63 goals, 180 assists) and 1,320 penalty minutes in 1,037 regular-season games with Boston, St. Louis, Winnipeg, Montreal, New York Rangers and Chicago from 1988-89 through 2003-04.
Newly-formed for the 2011-12 season, the Department of Player Safety works with Club General Managers, the Competition Committee and the NHL Players’ Association to continue to look at rules that can better protect players; focuses on safety issues related to players’ equipment and the playing environment; and administers supplemental player discipline.
