NEW YORK (January 16, 2012)—Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson, Chicago Blackhawks left wing Viktor Stalberg and Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin and have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’
for the week ending Jan. 15.
FIRST STAR—CRAIG ANDERSON, G, OTTAWA SENATORS
Anderson posted a 3-0-0 record, 0.98 goals-against average, .970 save percentage and one shutout to help the Senators improve to 25-15-6 and remain fifth in the Eastern Conference standings. Anderson made 29 saves in a 5-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins Jan. 10, stopped 34 shots for the 17th shutout of his NHL career in a 3-0 win over the New York Rangers Jan. 12 and turned aside 33 shots plus three shootout attempts in a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens Jan. 14. The Park Ridge, IL native, who captured NHL Third Star honors last week, has posted a 23-12-4 record, 2.96 goals-against average, .907 save percentage and one shutout in 41 appearances this season. He leads all NHL goaltenders in games, shots faced
(1,219) and saves (1,106).
SECOND STAR—VIKTOR STALBERG, LW, CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS
Stalberg tied for the League lead in goals (five) and added an assist as the Blackhawks (27-13-6) earned seven of eight points to take first place in the Western Conference standings. Stalberg began the week by recording the first hat trick of his NHL career, including the game-winning goal, in a 5-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets Jan. 10. He recorded his second consecutive game-winner in a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild Jan. 12 and finished the week with a one-goal, one-assist performance in a 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks Jan. 15. The Gothenburg, Sweden native, who turns 26 tomorrow, already has posted single-season career highs in goals (14) assists (14) and points (28).
THIRD STAR—EVGENI MALKIN, C, PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
Malkin led the NHL in points (seven) and tied for the lead in goals (five) last week as the Penguins (23-17-4) won twice in four starts. Malkin began the week by recording the only Pittsburgh goal in a 5-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators Jan. 10. He scored the game-winning goal in a 4-1 win over the Florida Panthers Jan. 13 and notched his second hat trick of the season, including the game-winner, plus two assists in a 6-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning Jan. 15. Malkin climbed to second place in the League scoring race with 51 points (21 goals, 30 assists) in 37 games.
