Stars Of The Week

NEW YORK (Nov. 14, 2011)—Boston Bruins center Tyler Seguin, Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard and Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for the week ending Nov. 13.

FIRST STAR - TYLER SEGUIN, C, BOSTON BRUINS

Seguin tallied six points (four goals, two assists), highlighted by a pair of game-winning goals, as the Bruins (8-7-0) won three all three starts last week. The 19-year-old center notched the game-winning goal in a 6-2 victory over the New York Islanders Nov. 7, scored the game-winner and added an assist in a 6-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers Nov. 10 and tallied two goals and one assist in a 6-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres Nov. 12. Seguin leads the Bruins with 20 points (11 goals, nine assists) in 15 games, joining Carolina’s Jeff Skinner as the only teenagers to top their club in scoring. He leads the NHL in plus-minus (+14) and is tied for second place overall in game-winning goals (three). His 11 goals match the total he recorded in 74 games during his rookie season of 2010-11. Seguin has an active six-game point streak, tallying 11 points (eight goals, three assists) in that span, and has tallied goals in four consecutive games.

After closing the month of October at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 3-7-0 record, the defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins have reeled off five consecutive wins, outscoring the opposition 30-10 during the streak.

SECOND STAR - JIMMY HOWARD, G, DETROIT RED WINGS

Howard posted a 3-0-0 record, 1.33 goals-against average and .948 save percentage as the Red Wings (9-5-1) climbed to fifth place in the Western Conference. Howard stopped 73 of 77 shots last week, beginning with 24 saves in a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche Nov. 8. He posted his eighth career NHL shutout with 24 saves in a 3-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers Nov. 11 and finished the week by making 25 saves in a 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars Nov. 15. Howard improved his season record to 8-3-1 with a 1.66 goals-against average, .934 save percentage and three shutouts.

He ranks among NHL goaltending leaders in wins (T-third), goals-against average (third), save percentage (sixth) and shutouts (T-first).

THIRD STAR - JONATHAN TOEWS, C, CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS

Toews notched six points (four goals, two assists) in four games last week, helping the Blackhawks (11-4-3) claim first place in the NHL overall standings. The Chicago captain tallied two goals and one assist in a 6-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets Nov. 10 for his first multi-goal and three-point outing of the season. He recorded one assist in a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames Nov. 11 and tallied twice in a 6-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers Nov. 13. Toews ranks first on the Blackhawks in goals (nine), is fourth on the club in points (9-6—15) and leads the NHL in face-off winning percentage (61.0%, 221 of 362).

That’s ok, Chief, a Cup win and Conn Smythe trophy looks better on the resume.

And we don’t want to risk Jimmah getting suspended.

“Toews notched six points (four goals, two assists) in four games last week…”

Franzen did the same last week in only 3 games.
