I link to 99.9% of everything here, but really impossible to link to what someone said on radio 30 seconds after it happened.

Paul, I meant eventually. Not exactly this instant! Hopefully, 590s website will feature the news on their website, or in a Toronto news paper.

Where did McCown hear this from? Legit source?  Someone calling in claiming to be Sidney’s Uncle Fred??

rjman48, it will eventually land here but sometimes they will put it up on their homepage where they roll through five top stories or so.The comment was made between the 15 and 25 minute mark of the first hour.

Truthfully, given the nature of what we’re learning about the effects of concussions on later life, Crosby would be pretty silly to not at least consider retirement.

Especially since retirement isn’t eternal.  He could retire for a year or two… or until the NHL develops a head-shot policy that doesn’t sound like it came from a wine-soaked hobo.

Bob McCown is a jack-ass, at least for the past five years, I don’t know about before that. He likes to throw shit out there, and I’ve heard many of his ‘scoops,’ they’re on David Shoalt’s level.

It’s nice that he “heard” that. Not even from an un-named source.

Rumour-mongering

And seriously Paul, how does that statement above make it onto this website, but an Eklund rumour that he “heard” is way below your level? (and I use Eklund simply as a simple example)

At least give us some type of reason to think that McCown is reliable enough to entertain his words. It’s because he’s employed by a radio station I take it. He just got a lot of hits on the radio website, and a lot of people listening to today’s podcast, and monday’s, as the “story” grows. Weird that he “heard” this on a friday during drive time.

First off NathanBC, Dwayne would have not given you a name where this came from.

Secondly, McCown is a very reputable source and has been doing radio for a long time.  He is more old school than anything close to new school, throw it out there and see if it sticks.

He recently told listeners problems with the bonds in Phoenix, everyone said no way, now look at where it is.

I reported that too and not many people questioned him then.

The Fan 590 is very solid source.

Not saying Sid will retire, but I will guarantee there is some truth in all this.

Maybe the headline is part of the problem, Paul.  If the phrasing was “A Surprising Crosby Rumor” it would be more appropriate, I think.

Characterizing an unsubstantiated report as “news” gives it a patina of credibility that perhaps it doesn’t deserve at this point.

Just a thought . ..

Like David Shoalts in print, right? He’s been doing his professional writing thing since the 80’s. Remember his great article referencing things he “heard” from sources about Crosby boycotting the All-Star game?

I just keep on thinking about how you always talk about only posting rumours (trades only?) when you’ve had them verified by two independant sources. You like to take a real hard-line stance on that, and make it clear you don’t deal in rumour-mongering.

I’m done talking, and I see your views from your above post.

NathanBC, I won’t allow you to put words in my mouth.

I only follow reputable sources for hockey news.  If they say it, then it is up to the KK reader to decide which way they want to go.

Lex Talionis, I can understand that and was thinking about using report instead of news, but McCown stated what he did with some true feeling, which may have mis-lead me, but I am not so sure of that.

Probably true. Some 95 year old aunt said he should retire to an island with his millions. Of course, she’s been saying that for years. When she’s not holding the telephone upside down or facing her camera the wrong way. But hey, technically, it IS family…

Really though, is it that far fetched that his family may be concerned about his long term health?  As a parent, if my son couldn’t stand bright lights or use a stationary bike because of post concussion symptoms I’d be talking to him about possibly hanging up the blades too.
