from Ken Warren of Senators Extra,
(Eugene) Melnyk understands that the Senators, who went into Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins with only one win and two extra time losses in their past six games, need to re-discover their groove soon to qualify for the post-season. He says the situation is akin to a playoff series, with the Senators needing to win four of its remaining seven games, including Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh, but says it’s possible they could “squeak” in by winning only three.
If, however, the Senators fail to hold on to their lead, Melnyk has a ready consolation speech, claiming that whatever happens from here on in, the organization is ahead of schedule.
“We never expected to make the playoffs and here we are, a contender,” he said. “We’ve got another draft coming. We’ve got a great pipeline of young players down the road. I couldn’t be happier. Sure, it’s so great to dream about getting into the playoffs, but we’re in the first year of the rebuild. I know a few other teams that have been rebuilding for five or six years and they haven’t come close to the playoffs. In our case, we’re going to be just fine. It was a three-year plan.”
