Sabres Training Camp Begins

Sabres veterans are reporting to training camp today for physicals and on-ice testing.  Full camp begins tomorrow, with 58 players - 33 forwards, 20 defensemen, and 5 goaltenders - scheduled to attend.

The Sabres go into camp with nine NHL-caliber defensemen vying for positions.  With Chris Butler and Andrej Sekera struggling a bit last season, opportunities exist for Mike Weber and Marc Andre-Gragnani to play their way onto the team.

Weber has already gotten off to a good start with an impressive showing at rookie camp.  There will be a spot for him if he keeps it going, especially since he now must clear waivers to get sent back to AHL Portland.  And pending what shakes down at camp, the Sabres aren’t averse to starting the season with eight defensemen.

Up front, much is expected of forward Tyler Ennis, who came on the scene at the end of last season with 13 points in 16 games counting regular season and playoffs.  Despite comments by Sabres GM Darcy Regier that he warned the young speedster not to take anything for granted, it’s a virtual lock that Ennis will be on the team.

Other players under the microscope will be Drew Stafford - whose career in Buffalo may be on the line this season, and 2009 first round pick Zack Kassian - the imposing hard nosed forward who has generated some buzz amongst Sabres fans while tallying 53 goals and 339 penalty minutes in 185 career games with Peterborough and Windsor (OHL).

Fans will get their first look at the team and their new jerseys at tomorrow’s “Sabres Puck Drop 2010” festivities at HSBC Arena.

I had to do a double take.  339 PIM in 185 career games.  Oh yeah, they’re gonna like him in Buffalo.
