Road Trip To Vegas?

from the Las Vegas Sun,

The Las Vegas Arena Foundation (LVAF) is proposing a 20,000-seat indoor arena to be built on the Strip on land owned by Caesars Entertainment behind Imperial Palace. The facility would be suitable for an NBA or NHL franchise, as well as other events such as concerts or the National Finals Rodeo, which has been at the Thomas & Mack Center since 1985. The LVAF is planning to fund the $500 million project by implementing a 0.9 percent sales tax for specified businesses within a three-mile radius of the proposed location….

If the arena were to be built, its Strip location would be head and shoulders above any current Las Vegas venue when it comes to attracting an NBA or NHL franchise. With up to 94 suites and a total capacity of nearly 20,000, the arena is aiming to compete with the multitude of sports facilities that house pro teams across the country.

I am not going to ask if you think hockey would work in Las Vegas, but I am more interested if you would consider a road trip to Vegas to watch your NHL team play?

I’m a five hour drive from Vegas. I wouldn’t drive to Vegas just to see the Wings play .... I barely drive the hour to Glendale to see them now .... but I’d definitely schedule a trip around the game if it worked out, but i’d fly!

Ten years ago I would’ve made a road trip for it, but I also made trips to Vegas because I woke up and it sounded like a good idea. And it usually was a great idea. And a terrible idea. Like most worthwhile trips to Vegas.

Probably not for a game. If it happened to be on when I was there maybe. Too many other things to do in Vegas rather than attend a hockey game.

Yeah, I heard about this.  The location’s right next door to the Sands Convention and Expo Center.  The Venetian/Palazzo’s gonna love that, too.

As with all things construction in Vegas, I’ll believe it when I see it.  Construction on the proposed $4.2 billion casino/residential/shopping project, The Echelon, was halted because one of Boyd Gaming’s partners, Michael Gaughn (owner of South Point Resort/Casino), backed out for whatever reason.  As a result, there’s a hulking mass of concrete skeletons on the lot.

Then the proposed Fontainebleu Resort/Casino died due to lack of funding and now there’s that friggin’ blight of a blue corpse left behind.  Currently, Kirk Kerkorian owns the thing but he’s just waiting for his time to sell it - as is his modus operandi.

Yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it since the funding for the new arena is hinged on discriminatory sales tax increases.  Good luck with that, idiots.

Good thing, since the Las Vegas Wranglers were in the ECHL Finals this past season.  They also drew a respectable average reg season attendance of 4,339.  Might not be the NHL, but hockey does “work” in Vegas.

They have to go bonkers with promotions and the like to get them there though.  Back in the old IHL the Thunder drew quite well, but since… it’s gotten to be a tougher sell.

It certainly wouldn’t get me to go to Vegas.  Been there, done that…

In a 7,778-seat arena.  We’ve had attendance as low as 1,900.
