Responding To Don Cherry

from TSN,

Cherry then singled out three former players who made careers out of fighting on the ice for being among those trying to link the deaths with on-ice thuggery.

“The ones that I am really disgusted with ... are the bunch of pukes that fought before: Stu Grimson, Chris Nilan and Jim Thomson. (They say) ‘Oh, the reason that they’re drinking, (taking) drugs and alcoholics is because they’re fighting.’ You turncoats. You hypocrites,” Cherry said.

“If there’s one thing I’m not it’s a hypocrite. You guys were fighters, and now you don’t want guys to make the same living you did.”

Grimson, Nilan and Thomson all appeared on TSN’s “Off the Record” on Friday, and all three took exception with the allegations made by Cherry.

These staged fights where goon for team A says to goon for team B, “You wanna go, eh?”, then the two goons spend the next minute and a half having a fake fight are nothing and detract from hockey.  Wasting a roster spot on this sort of foolishness is senseless.

A guy who can fight and play can be important.  I know that Grimson could take a regular shift as could such notorious characters as Joey Kocur.  How many players who are known today as fighters can say that?  Well, Jamal Mayers used to be able to, but his play is not even a shadow of his former skill set.  That is a shame as I always admired his hard nose, but skilled play.

Carcillo does not fight, nor does Avery; they are dirty cheap shot artists and beneath contempt.

Don Cherry is an oaf and an idiot.  He has not been relevant since, well, he was a lousy coach who got fired because he wanted a team of goons.  I guess he has never been relevant.  The CBC needs to put a muzzle on him and assign him to doing fashion reporting.
