Report- Toronto/Nashville Trade

via Damien Cox tweet,

Toronto Star sources confirm Leafs have acquired D Cody Fransen and C Matthew Lombardi from NASH for D Brett Lebda and F Robert Slaney.

added 12:12pm, also from Cox tweet,

There are also conditional mid-round picks involved in the TOR-NASH trade depending on Lomardi’s health. He played only 2 games last year.

added 12:14pm,

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 3, 2011) – Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Brett Lebda and forward Robert Slaney from the Toronto Maple Leafs for defenseman Cody Franson and forward Matthew Lombardi. The deal also includes a fourth-round pick – Nashville will acquire Toronto’s 2013 fourth rounder if Lombardi plays 60 or more games regular-season games over the course of 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, while Toronto will acquire Nashville’s 2013 fourth rounder if Lombardi does not play 60 games during the next two campaigns.

“Unfortunately, Matthew Lombardi’s concussion last season and recovery left us uncertain about his ability to come back for this season, and that uncertainty has made it difficult for us to move forward, plan and develop our lineup,” Poile said. “We never like to give up young homegrown talent like Cody Franson, but have to give up something in order to put ourselves in position to do other things to improve our team, which we are committed to doing between now and training camp.”

Franson is a solid up and coming defenseman and Lombardi has proven he can produce when healthy. Great move for Leaf nation.

Brett Lebda was responsible for so many bad rushes and giveaways.  As others said, if Lombardi even plays half the season, this will be a steal.

Even if Lombardi never plays another game again, Nashville got hosed. Colorado maybe made the worst trade so far this year by giving up a first (possible lottery pick) and second for Varlamov, but this is the most inexplicable. What the frak was Poile thinking?

Wow what a steal by the Leafs, could your GM please teach ours how to do “GOOD TRADES”. Wow!

This Fransen kid looks like a keeper on the blueline.

Someone would actually trade to get Lebda? Fire that Nashville GM ASAP. Holy cow did they get fleeced.

Nashville needs to free up room to sign Weber. I get it. But damn. Don’t get hosed this bad.

Meanwhile Sharks GM Doug Wilson was sitting on the sidelines while Franzen got traded. Hell Wilson would have given up 10 prospects and numerous draft picks for him.

I’m not sold on Toronto’s goaltending, but they are close to becoming a playoff team in the East.

I really don’t see how Hickville is going to be able to keep Weber AND Suter. Unless Suter is willing to take less than he’s worth (and doesn’t mind playing for a non-contender) I would think he’d prefer to play elsewhere…oh, and Detroit may have an extra $6.2mil laying around next season.

Yeah, I’m getting ahead of myself.

Wow… absolutely terrible trade for NSH. Why any team would still desire Lebda is beyond me. He hasn’t proven himself anywhere and is still making $1.5 mil

With the Predators’ ridiculous amount of cap space available, this may actually set Lebda up to be bought out by the Predators (as I recall, the Predators have a second buy-out window due to the fact that they’re taking Weber to arbitration). Franson is a much better defenseman and tossing Lebda’s $1.45 million into buy-out mode for two years would make some sense…

Otherwise, it’s quite the cap dump by Nashville to begin with, which is weird.

You know it’s a bad trade if the fans don’t care who they are getting back, they just care that they are getting rid of Lebda. Poor Nashville.

Shea Weber can blow soap bubbles harder than Leb-duh can shoot the puck.

I have a lot of respect for how NSH has managed to run a competitive team with so little, but this move is kinda baffling.

No kidding, wasn’t Poile up for GM of the year - - this makes little sense to me.

You have to do something really boneheaded in the NHL to make Brian Burke look smart.

Wow.  I was actually pretty impressed with what I’d seen of Cody Fransen.  Maybe it is a prelude to a buyout.  I mean otherwise can’t imagine Poile making a trade like this.

Yup, Nashville got fleeced on this one. What dirt does Burke have on Poile, one has to wonder…

Even ignoring the return, I don’t understand this. Lombardi may very well be done with hockey, but why’d they give up on Fransen?

No dirt, just enough money to afford an uninsured contract on a player still feeling concussed. Jonathan Willis gives the explanation here.

Toronto dumped a couple of headaches, took on what might be an expensive contract for a player who can no longer play, and the price was Cody Franson. Nashville payed a solid young player to save several million dollars.

Payed = paid, of course.

Toronto used their financial muscle to their advantage against Nashville.

Oh, wait, I get it now. If Lombardi’s hurt, they can’t buy him out. Lebda, they can buy out at a fraction of the price they would owe Lombardi even if he wasn’t hurt.

Fransen was traded for ~$3 million more (dollars, not capspace) to resign Weber.
