Press conference day begins with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren’s take on the shape of the Flyers to come

Philadelphia Flyers GM Palu Holmgren kicked off a day’s worth of conference calls from the Flyers, Nashville Predators and Shea Weber, and the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sam Carchidi kicks things off with a Cliff’s Notes version of Holmgren’s presser:

In a conference call with reporters a few minutes ago, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said he probably won’t pursue another RFA this summer, added he was close to resigning Jakub Voracek, and claimed his pursuit of Shea Weber was only because of his stature - and not because he is unhappy with his defense.

“We have to move forward,” he said.

Holmgren also hinted that the Bobby Ryan talks are not dead.

The GM said Shane Doan wants to remain in Phoenix, but that if he has a change of heart, the Flyers have interest.

1) What else could he say about his defense?  Its not like he has a ton of other options out there right now. Clearly they needed to add another top defender to compete for the Cup and failing that he has to save face for the organIzation that he’s happy with the players he has.
2) I think the Weber incident will deter anymore BIG offer sheets in the future(especially as anticipated the new CBA limits bonuses and contract length)
