Out To Screw-Over Vancouver

from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,

By now, of course, it’s a well-known fact in these environs that a very sophisticated conspiracy exists in the NHL which has been designed for two purposes.

One, to screw the Vancouver Canucks at every turn.

Two, to call the games in a way which benefits a few select teams. These teams have yet to be identified. The operatives in NHL headquarters, after all, aren’t amateurs. But it seems any team not named the Flames or the Oilers are in on the plot. The Senators might be excluded as well. This just means Stephen Harper isn’t doing his job.

The latest example of this conspiracy occurred Monday night when the big market Los Angeles Kings were in town. Try as they might, and they tried mightily, the officials couldn’t make enough calls to hand the Kings the game and they went down to a 1-0 defeat.

The Kings, in fact, have yet to win a Stanley Cup in their 55-year history. This could mean many things. In Vancouver, we know it’s designed to throw us off the scent.

Now, not all NHL teams support the conspiracy theory. This just means they’re living in a dream world. But if you needed further convincing, I asked to interview NHL v-p Brendan Shanahan on these and other matters and was told Mr. Shanahan would be unavailable because he wants the focus to be on hockey.

Read the whole thing fyi.  I don’t think things have to be as grand as he implies they “would” be but there are definitely relationships on the ice betweens players and officials and I thi…know… that plays into a good bit of their calls.  ::coughhomerbertuzzicough::

Think it’s marginalizing the real issue by implying it’s all a grand conspiracy or it’s all fluke and random.  As usual, the truth lies somewhere int he middle.

Didn’t realize the Kings started playing in 1957. Why were their first ten seasons covered up ? Clearly this conspiracy goes deeper than any of us imagined.

Of course the conspiracy theories are idiotic. But they shouldn’t draw people’s attention from the fact that the referees leave a lot to be desired. Whether by making phantom calls or letting lots of things go,the quality of officiating in the NHL is bad and never seems to get better. The standard changed at some point after Christmas. It’s obvious. Anyone watching can see it clearly. Yet the league refuses to entertain the notion. Such lack of forthrightness makes the league seem dishonest and like they take their fans for fools.

Hey now, those were actually outstanding years for the Kings. We won the Cup a couple of times and came close a third time, but unfortunately everything’s kept on the down low. Double secret probation is a bitch.
