Oilers Need An Edge To Their Game?

from David Staples of the Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal,

There are all kinds of great players who never hit or slash anybody, who never engage in the dark arts of hockey.

Jean Ratelle, Patrick Kane, Steven Stamkos, Evgeni Malkin, the Sedin brothers, Anze Kopitar, the Mahovlich brothers,  Guy Lafleur, Mike Bossy, Jari Kurri, Marcel Dionne, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, Mark Recchi, Adam Oates, Pavel Datsyuk, Pavel Bure, Dale Hawerchuk, Serge Savard, Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull, Mike Modano, Teemu Selanne . . . .

And yet, even if it’s clear that great players are often not mean or nasty or violent players, there is a desire among some fans of the Edmonton Oilers to see more toughness and meanness in the games of skilled players such as Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Magnus Paajarvi and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Baaaad list.

Kane dishes out plenty of cheapshots.  He has no self-control quite frankly.

Brett Hull gave out plenty, they just never got called.
Mario Lemieux… that guy got away with more little stuff, I swear.
Selanne is also not a guy that never slashes anyone or never tries to pull anything.  He has quite a temper too.

Datsyuk is also quite nasty, though legally.  Ask NHLers if they want to go into a corner with him… he’ll give you that little “extra” now…

Yea, Bure was famous for turning the other cheek:

Kane disguises his cheap shots as incidental high sticks… he seriously has to get the most high sticking penalties in the league…I’m too lazy to back that one up. He thinks he needs to get his stick up to protect himself since he is small. Its quite annoying to hear “chicago penalty number 88, patrick kane, double minor for high sticking at…”

I’ve seen enough of the Sedins to know they are complete pieces of crap. Maybe its just one of them, I can never figure out which one is which… They just don’t get called for anything, ever. This year a Sedin chopped Crawford in the crotch while he froze a puck that was no where near his crotch. In the playoffs one Sedin trips Crawford after the horn sounded to end the period then took a dive when Campbell touched him while the other then shoots the puck at Crawford, again, well after the whistle and starts bumping him… TRUE HUMANITARIANS!

Lets just say half of that list just didnt get penalties called for their antics…

Malkin put Willie Mitchell out for a lengthy period of time with a hit that would get at least 5 games from Sheriff Shanahan.  Geno also doesn’t shy away from slashing and likes to slew-foot as well.

How he made Staples list I’ll never know.

P.S. How long until EvilPens starts attacking me for attacking a member of the Penguins?

The oil drafted high skill, clean players. There’s no need for them to get goonish.
