Now What Phoenix?

from Global TV Winnipeg,

The would-be buyer of the Phoenix Coyotes says that its talks with the City of Glendale about taking ownership of the Phoenix Coyotes have broken down; adding more fuel to the fire burning under Winnipeg fans who believe the National Hockey League team will be coming back to the Manitoba capital.

Ice Edge Holdings representative Daryl Jones said in a Twitter post at about 8:40 this evening, “Ice Edge is confirming reports that talks have broken down with COG (City of Glendale)”

Reports suggest the company backed away after the Phoenix, AZ suburb where the Coyotes play failed to meet its demand for exclusivity in talks about ownership of the team. It’s just the latest twist in a chaotic process that’s seen the city reject Ice Edge in favour of a bid by Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf.

“Talks have broken off,” Ice Edge chief operating office Daryl Jones told the Free Press late Monday night.

“We were adamant about needing exclusivity in these negotiations and they haven’t provided it. I’m not totally surprised. We’ve been dealing with this for a while. We thought we had agreed to certain things and expected them in writing. That didn’t materialize.”

added 6:27am on 5/11/10, from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,

Ice Edge Holdings and the city of Glendale, Ariz., have agreed on a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) for an arena lease that is much the same as their previous one, but city council will not get a look at it Tuesday night because the NHL is still putting on a squeeze play.

The group of Canadian and American investors who make up Ice Edge told city officials to sort out the demand from the NHL that the city cover the operating losses of the Phoenix Coyotes next season before they present the new MOU to council for discussion and a vote.

Let’s stop jerking Canadian hockey fans around.

We all know that the only way Buttman is letting one of his hand-placed teams get relocated is over his dead body.

All this is just turning stupid.  If Ice Edge doesn’t work then the NHL will retain ownership, and completely cave to Glendale, until an owner is found.  Once they find a potential new owner they will make sure that the ‘Yotes stay in Az.

Jeebus, the CoG have built-in poison pills.  More and more possible white knights are backing out of dealing with CoG.
