TORONTO (October 4, 2011) – Longtime scout Dan Marr has joined the National Hockey League as Director of Central Scouting, Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell announced today. Marr succeeds the late E.J. McGuire, who led the NHL’s amateur scouting service for six years until his passing in April.
“With his extensive experience in the game of hockey, we are pleased to have Dan join our organization,” Campbell said. “We look forward to having him lead our Central Scouting staff while bringing his knowledge and enthusiasm to the challenge of building upon Central Scouting’s history of success.”
A member of the Atlanta Thrashers organization since 1998, Marr spent the last seven seasons as the Club’s Director of Amateur Scouting and Player Development.
“I am excited about the opportunity to lead an experienced team of scouts and continue servicing our member Clubs as the first source of scouting information,” Marr said. “E.J. McGuire’s leadership and innovation in this position over the past several years was unparalleled and I hope to be able to carry on his tradition of excellence.”
The Dunnville, Ontario, native first worked in the NHL in 1986 as an athletic trainer with the Toronto Maple Leafs before becoming a full-time scout for the club in 1989. He spent 12 years with the Maple Leafs prior to joining the Thrashers.
In its 37th year of operation, the NHL Central Scouting Service provides scouting and evaluation of draft-eligible players to NHL member clubs. NHL Central Scouting employs eight full-time and 15 part-time scouts throughout North America. To report on prospects playing in Europe, the NHL employs the services of Goran Stubb and his staff of six scouts at European Scouting Services based in Finland. Combined, the NHL Central Scouting and European Scouting Service will see in excess of 3,000 games this season.
