New Jersey Devils eliminate Philadelphia Flyers, advance to Eastern Conference Finals

In an utterly bizarre game, Ilya Bryzgalov gave up a terrible goal and yet kept a Philadelphia Flyers team that seemed to forget how to play defense and how to score goals in a game the New Jersey Devils almost easily won, first off-side goal included, by a 3-1 tally, capturing the series in 5 games.

The Devils advance to face the winner of the Washington-New York series in the Eastern Conference Finals, while the Flyers face off-season questions regarding their goaltending, defense and scoring despite playing superbly during the regular season and first round against the favored Penguins.

Here’s Bryzgalov’s “oops!” moment…

And here’s Kovalchuk’s winner:

I really thought it was classy of Claude Giroux to come down from the press box to shake hands with the Devils…It doesn’t atone for what he did, but it was still a stand-up thing to do.

Update #2: Here’s the handshake line:

Update #2.5: Here’s Kovalchuk’s dagger:

Update #3: Here are NHL.com’s game highlights:

George, would a Raffi Torres, Matt Cooke or Neal would of done this? I think not. Giroux is nothing like them. This what i hate about the suspension. It puts him in a category he’s not apart of.

Giroux would of made of a difference in this kinda of a game. But he decided to do the stupid thing. Flyers lost this series when they stop playing defense. Better team won.

The Twitter crowd got angry when I just said that Giroux did something very classy without a caveat. I thought it was ten kinds of ballsy and classy.

Philly seemed to lose all focus and motivation during game 4. They (players and coaches) spent so much time complaining to officials there’s no way their heads were completely in the game. Add to that a downright awful goaltending performance and there’s really no surprise here. Philly is loaded with talent but they seem to care entirely too much about retribution and personal grudges.

Since the Wings were eliminated, I’ve posted a few times that I’m pulling for a PHX/NJD finals. So not every poster was predicting the Flyers to win this series (not that it matters at all)

The bankruptcy finals. I rather see La vs NY before we get the lockout.

He would not have been suspended if he didn’t throw that hit, so don’t blame the suspension.

totally bankruptcy finals. Gary wanted parity. PHX/NJD would be what parity looks like. The upside will be the ready availability of SCF tickets.

Glad to see Philly eliminated, they turned into the Penguins last series and lost their cool.  Brz does not perform in the playoffs and they got 8 more years of that, great contract that will be impossible to get rid off.

Giroux showed his true colors in this series.  It’s easy to be classy when things are going your way(round 1), but when things aren’t going his way he turned into a whining, cheap shot artist.  Fits in Philly perfectly.

Giroux at least showed that his actions were in the heat of the moment variety and not what he wants to be when thinking rationally. He deserved the suspension and paid the ultimate price watching his team self destruct with nothing he could do about it. This was just a collective failure of the Flyers to maintain their composure after playing a team that was more than willing to retaliate or instigate along with them at every turn in the first round.

redxblack: The Devils were the beasts of the East and played in 4 finals in a 9 year stretch in an uncapped world. Since then they’ve been one of the best (total points) regular season teams, without playoff success. Their run this year doesn’t qualify as “parity” (such a dirty word!). It was a good/lucky 7 game stretch. If they win the next series, you could say the same thing.

The success of teams founded after 1969 does not = parity.
