Name The Conferences

from Mike Brehm of Game On at USA TODAY,

The one thing missing when the NHL took the major step Monday night of realigning into four conferences was the names of those conferences.

Phoenix Coyotes tough guy and Tweeter extraordinaire Paul Bissonette suggested naming them after rappers.

Another NHL player, Andrew Ebbett, went the hockey movie route: “Reggie Dunlop, Gordon Bombay, Dean Youngblood and either Hanson Brothers or Ogie Ogilthorpe.”

OK, we know those won’t fly. So what should they do?

continue for a bit more…

Howe, Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman?

But I doubt 2 Wings will pass, since a lot of cry would happen

How about
Yzerman (Wings conference), Gretzky (LA), Lemieux (Pitts) and Neely (Boston)

Just to take a few players from the same era

Leaders, Legends, Heritage, and….

No, I’m kidding.

I know everyone likes Orr, Howe, Gretzky, etc… but the fact is the Adams, Patrick, Smythe, and Norris weren’t ALL named with tie-ins.  After all the Smythe Division and Conn Smythe had no ties at all.

With that in mind, they should pick 4 meaningful names from the past (pre-1970 or 1980 probably), regardless of ties, teams, or geography, and assign them to the conferences.

After all, Chicago wouldn’t want to play in the Howe Division, Montreal would chafe at the idea of an Orr (much like Boston wouldn’t go for a Richard), and no way Calgary accepts playing in the Gretzky.

Pick 4 builders, draw them out of a hat, and there you go.

Meh.. Too bad we cant have nice things, but I really dont like those old builders names

Seriously, how much of the fan base would have a clue for where the names came from, anyway?

I would rather go with something more easily recognizable

You can’t name the conference after a current owner, a current GM, and a prospective owner who still claims the league owes him about $9M.

Howe would be a cool name though.

Why not, JJ?
Its just a name

The dont get more home games, or something like that, so why not?

Mostly because it’s bad form.

If you want casual fans to believe you don’t play favorites, it’s in your best interest for them to never have it explained to them that Mario Lemieux owns a team that plays in the Lemieux division.

Or “conference”, since words mean things.

I agree.  And I wouldn’t expect them to…at least not right now.  Someday, down the line, if he isn’t the owner anymore or whatever…then you have to consider it.  He’s one of the greatest to play the game…and probably the most skilled.

Is there ANY other term besides “Division” and “Conference” that could be used, because honestly both are now kinda’ inappropriate for the new alignment?

I’d prefer division to conference, but you could also go with

Block (blok), sphere, territory, branch, department, sector, group, association, assortment, posse, syndicate, pool, cluster, batch, cartel, or plenty of others.

I think names like Yzerman, Lemieux, Bourque, Gretzky, Roy, and Neely haven’t had enough time to age.  Names like Howe, Richard, Plante, Sawchuk, Bobby Hull, and Orr have a timelessness to them that the newer ones do not.  I’m not saying it wouldn’t be totally appropriate to honor the first group I mentioned at some point down the line, but I think its still too soon for those guys.

Gary will probably just go with:

“Sid’s”
“Not Sid’s”
“Also not Sid’s”
“Thank Goodness Sid isn’t way out here so I would have to travel all the way across the country to see him play”

Gretzky, Howe, Richard, Garth.

And every year the conferences are renamed, with the conference containing the Stanley Cup champion taking on the Garth Conference name.

Also, maybe in a couple years we rename the Stanley Cup…

The first three are easy: West, Midwest, East.
For the fourth we could go with “North-South”, or “Leftovers” or just plain “What-the-Hell?”

Bettman North, Bettman South, Bettman East, Bettman West.

That way he has his name on everything.

Does anyone else get that sinking feeling that we could see sponsored Divisions/Conferences like the BCS bowl games?

Bettman, don’t do it!!!

JJ (I think) alluded to that earlier on Twitter, but I don’t see it as any real possibility.

I really think Bettman wants to keep the geographic/region names possibility out there for the owners to chew on, but that they all know that’s not what people want.  The problem is going to be getting them to actually agree on what 4 names (for reasons we’ve discussed already).

I’m not a huge Bettman fan or anything, but he’s not actually just stupid or something.  He fought his battle, got what he wanted, so he’ll retreat for now and fight the names battle later and in the meantime let the public debate it and the owners think on it.

I don’t rule out the possibility of names like National, Heritage, etc either if they can actually come up with 4.

Good point. It is already bad enough to see the hologram ads on the glass behind the goal. Not to mention the boards and the ice surface itself.

Watching the zillions of commercials should be adequate, but, money talks.

Yeah, I jokingly said “Verizon, Miller Lite, Geico, Bridgestone”

There’s a grain of truth to every bit of sarcasm.  I hope and pray they won’t, but I could see it happening in my lifetime.

I don’t see a problem with using the names Howe, Hull, Orr, and Richards.  Just don’t line them up with the teams they played with.

For example, make the midwest the Orr Conference, the west the Richards Conference, the Northeast/Florida the Hull Conference and New York City + it’s suburbs the Howe Conference.
