Montreal Memories In 2011

from Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette,

Here, then, are a few personally memorable events from the past 12 months, culled in no particular order from the reporting trail:

Marcel Marceau Award: Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier. Sadly, his acceptance speech is inaudible.

Delay-of-Game Award: Habs’ Price and Bruins’ Thomas “fight” in the Feb. 9 gong show in Boston. We’ve seen better scraps by kittens at a bowl of cream.

Royalty at the Bell Centre: Home games are incomplete if I look down from my press-gallery seat above centre ice and don’t see the snow-capped Jean and Élise Béliveau in their regular spot, three rows behind the Canadiens bench.

Most misunderstood coach: For 90 enlightening minutes in mid-November, I sit with Canadiens coach Jacques Martin in his Brossard office for a feature profile and observe not the individual many call an emotionless robot, but an engaging, insightful man to whom hockey is in every drop of his blood. A month later on Twitter, I break the story that he’s been fired.
