Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty runs into some serious legal trouble

Per the Los Angeles Times’ Jack Leonard and Helene Elliott:

Los Angeles County prosecutors are reviewing an allegation by a woman who alleges she was sexually assaulted earlier this year by L.A. Kings player Drew Doughty, a district attorney’s spokeswoman said Tuesday.

“It’s under review,” said spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons, who declined to detail the allegations, citing the office’s pending decision. “I expect a resolution this week.”

Doughty’s attorney, Craig Renetzky, said that although the case was technically under review, he expects it will be rejected this week.

The Hermosa Beach Police Department, which investigated the case, did not return numerous calls for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Doughty was the second overall pick by the Kings in the 2008 draft. The Canadian defenseman missed almost all of training camp before this season before signing an eight-year, $56-million deal that made him the team’s highest-paid player by average annual value. He had two goals and four assists during the Stanley Cup Final, along with goals against St. Louis and Phoenix en route to the championship series.

How can he be “late on this report” that was posted by the LA Times earlier the same day?

Paul and I chose specifically to wait until a hockey outlet posted it. The timing of a TMZ article about a Los Angeles Kings player in trouble with the law seemed too incredibly convenient. We wanted confirmation from something other than a tabloid, even if that tabloid is generally accurate.

It’s an editorial decision and I stand by it. We’re not TMZ.

Couldn’t agree more.  You and Paul keep up the good work.

via Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,

Here are a few more details on the allegations against Drew Doughty, as provided in reports by the Los Angeles Times and the Daily Breeze..

Per both stories, Hermosa Beach Sgt. Robert Higgins said that a 25-year-old woman has alleged that Doughty forced her into a cab and then sexually assaulted her at her home. Per the Daily Breeze, Higgins said Doughty said the encounter was consensual. Per the Times, Higgins said that the accuser has been “less than cooperative” and that “credibility problems” have been found in her story.

Doughty has not been charged with a crime. Doughty’s lawyer, Craig Renetzky, posted on Twitter that that case is under review by the District Attorney’s office and that “a charging decision will be made in the next few days.”
