Kid Gets A Snow Shower

how does that explanation make sense?  it only explains why he skated across the ice to the bench.  it doesn’t explain why it was necessary to spray snow at a little kid waving the opposing team’s flag.  he could have easily stopped the other way and not done that.  seems pretty shitty to me to do that to a little kid who is probably already scared out of his mind, just trying to make sure he’s in the right spot at the right time doing the right thing.

So Ovechkin’s superstition is to scare and spray little kids before games?

Good to know.

What a douchenozzle.  I used to admire the guy but I’ve seen a few things from him this year that are just not cool.  This is the freakin’ worst.  What paulinmiamibeach said about sums it up for me.  You want to be a jerk to a grown up that’s one thing but to treat a nervous kid like crap during what must be the greatest moment in that kid’s life?  Loser.
I don’t buy HI/O’s explanation either.  And btw, here’s the twitter post from the Caps pr guy,
“1) Kid shouldn’t stand in front of our bench 2) guarantee he’s bragging to friends about having snow sprayed by Ovi”
Double douche loser.

The kid has terminal cancer. Doubt bragging to his friends is top of his list of things to do before he dies.

Yes, I’m sure that was his idea

All the questions about why people think the Capitals organization is classless in a post yesterday should be answered by this video right here.

THIS is why people think the Capitals are classless.

That and, if what dwgs says is true, the Twitter post, too.

How in the world can you defend this?  It’s absolutely despicable.  What a dick.

Cue the Ovechkin apologists:  Caps fans, Bruce, Ted…...but he’s just passionate, just a big kid having fun out there, we would never want to change him

Ovechkin is an adult, the richest player in the NHL and wears a C.  He needs to grow up and think about what he does.

Agreed completely. And, wow. Who in their right mind does something like this? A commenter on Habs IO claims that Ovie was also high-fiving his teammates afterwards; I’m not sure if he was celebrating what he just did or just getting them fired up but…wow…that’s unreal.

If this is true, and it makes sense in the “Make-a-Wish Foundation” way, then the douche factor raises exponentially.

I have such ill will towards crapitals. They are a bunch tough guys wannabe’s that plays no defense and a coach that cries like a cabbage patch everytime things doesn’t go his way. Their fans are mentally retarded because they think everytime a crapitals player falls on the ice by himself there should be a power play for them.  I pray to god that AO meets pronger’s elbow in the second round.

Maybe there’s a chance that Ovechkin, who put on a ludicrous display meant not for Datsyukian die-hard fans but for the kids when he went for his final All-Star Breakaway challenge run 15 months ago in that same arena, has heard of Jeremy Roenick and Gordie Howe.

You know, that Jeremy Roenick who is one of the top American NHLers of all time, and who fondly recounts a story of watching Gordie Howe during a practice, pressed up against the glass. Howe skated over, picked up some snow on his blade, and dumped it over the glass onto Roenick’s head. “For those three seconds it was me, and Gordie Howe, and nobody else.” Roenick’s retirement story.

But then again, there will never be a story exactly like that. And again, maybe Gordie Howe was wrong to what he did all those decades ago. And maybe, just maybe, Ovechkin was trying to kill the kid he’d tried so hard to make smile those 15 months ago. *sigh*

It’s not even what Ovechkin did that calls the organization’s “class” into question. It’s how his enablers in hockey operations handle it. They blame the kid. Just checked the PR guy’s twitter account. He’s STILL blaming the kid.

If Malkin does this, Granato and/or Guerin drag his ass into the locker room and rip him one he’ll never forget.

If Carcillo does this, Pronger (that paragon of virtue) probably makes him go back and apologize in front of 20,000 people. Then Carcillo can likely look forward to Laviolette sitting him next game.

If he was trying to make a fun experience for the kid he should have let the kid know that.  Call me crazy but there’s a huge different between a player dumping some snow over the glass and snow blasting a little kid.  Do you think a goalie would see them as the same, if a player came up and dropped some snow on him or skated up on him and gave him a snow shower…. One is obviously classless.. the way they blame the kid for standing in front of the bench is classless, the way budreau whines and cries on a nightly basis when the night doesn’t go his way.  I don’t think he’s ever held his stars to any kind of accountability.  Ovi’s takin’ runs at people and talkin’ a remarkable amount of smack with little to no respect for him opponets it seems.  He says something positive once for every 20 negative remarks.  The NHL in DC is turning into the NFL.  You’re right whoever said it was his Roid Rage.  Guy gained 25 pounds this past summer?  215 last year 235 this year?  Can we give whatever Ovi’s gettin’ to Pav and Hank?  Can you imagine a 225 Pav and hank?  Those guys are real pieces of work.  And for as great as they think they are.. Ovi hasn’t even been able to get past the 2nd round of the playoffs… let alone medal in the olympics :x I hope that was offsides.

Thanks, dude.  No offense or anything, I just like to see proof and I have no idea what the PR guy’s Twitter account was - or even how Twitter works.

Posted by steve on 04/22/10 at 12:49 PM ET

And could you imagine the outrage if another current Penguin that leads the 2010 playoffs in scoring?  Jesus.

No idea how you can blame the kid.  Or whoever set up the pre-game ceremony.  There is absolutely ZERO excuse for this.  He’s one of the “faces” of the league.  He’s a superstar.  He’s a captain.  Grow. The. F*ck. Up.  It’s a kid and it wasn’t his fault that he was standing where he was standing.  The kid didn’t deserve that.

We are talking about a kid getting hit with a little bit of snow on an ice rink who doesn’t seem to be at all fazed by it, correct? A little bit blown out of proportion.

The only issue in this non-issue is the Caps PR still in its respective terrible hockey team phase, they over protect their team because they have been bad so long they can’t take any form of critcism like a mature organization. A successful organization can take an honest look at itself and correct its flaws perceived or otherwise and learn to be a little bit more gracious. Would it have been so hard to say, “Ovechkin meant no harm by it and was just being playful. We apologize for giving the impression that we are trying to intimidate children.”

What I don’t find surprising is the lack of outrage from the Montreal media (or maybe I just haven’t seen it) that Price shot the puck at the Caps celebrating after they scored one of their goals and that he took a swipe at Backstrom from the bench after he score the empty netter. That is being pretty petulant. A Temperment like that shows that he can’t handle the pressure of being a true number 1 netminder.

Yeah, he didn’t need to do that.  It was a hometeam pomp.  He could’ve stopped at another part of the dasher and skated unobtrusively to the door to the bench.

About the only thing he could have done to garner even less sympathy would have been to plow through and spray the kid with kittens. What a fuchup.
