John Erskine: Pugilist, Sniper, Mustachioed Warrior

Forget Darryl Sittler’s 10-point performance of 30 some-odd years ago…

I believe it is entirely possible that Washington’s John Erskine may have had the greatest hockey game in the history of the planet last night.

No, his stat line won’t wow you but this game-winner against Atlanta was just icing on top of a cake that already included layers of an epic scrap with Eric Boulton and the all kinds of awesomeness that is the Erskine ‘stache.

Take in the fight, please:

Just killer…

For a stay-at-home, banger defenseman, this was the game of games: a memorable brawl with a formidable opponent and the GWG to close things out (and a plus-two, no less!), all while supporting “Movember” with a classic Fu.

Know what?

John Erskine wins.

Erskine gets the top toast for yesterday (as if I need to make that clear) but here are my other salutes from this weekend’s action:

Friday:

***Phoenix’s Vernon Fiddler, with his first career hat trick in a win over Calgary
**Colorado’s David Jones, leading the Avs with a pair of goals over Columbus.
*And Colorado’s Peter Budaj, who stopped 28 Blue Jacket shots in the 5-1 win.

Saturday:

***Ottawa’s Brian Elliott, who did what was necessary to hand Tim Thomas his first loss of the year, shutting out Boston with 31 saves.
**Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin, with a hat trick and four points in a win over Atlanta.
*And the ageless Ray Whitney, with a trick of his own and five in the point column, as Phoenix toppled the Blues.

And Sunday (joining top star Erskine):

***Minnesota’s Niklas Backstrom, with 37 saves as the Wild rolled Tampa 4-1.
**And Marion Gaborik of the New York Rangers, who rejoined the Blueshirts’ lineup in fine fashion with a three-goal, four-point performance in an 8-2 rout of visiting Edmonton.

***

The Bolts Beat tonight is sure to be a doozy. Plenty to rip on this week, aside from our usual Lightning and NHL banter.

Stay tuned for that.

What is this; 1993?

10 goals scored and a fight that was actually entertaining where several bombs were thrown and landed?

This is NOT the kind of hockey real hockey fans like!
We want a 2-1 game where there’s as much defense on the ice as there is in a fight!

Who needs entertaining games like this one!?!?!

By the way, does your cologne come with real bits of panther?

It’s illegal in nine countries. But 60% of the time, it works everytime. It’s science you know. wink
