Kukla's Korner Hockey

In the debut of the new, daily feature from yours truly, I offer a morning toast to those who deserve as much for their performances of a night ago:
***Cheers to Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk, for stepping up to Anaheim’s Corey Perry and earning the decisive victory in a scrap last night. He may have taken himself out of the running for the Lady Byng Trophy in this season’s very first game but taking out a bullying Perry, in this instance, was well worth it.
**Cheers to Carolina’s Jeff Skinner, who iced Minnesota with a nifty shootout goal in Helsinki, giving his club their second win in as many days over the Wild. Skinner also earned his first career point in the contest, an assist on Tuomo Ruutu’s second period goal, and drew rave reviews in his first two NHL games. The 18-year-old center (who will have to toast with grape juice, of course) is one of several promising youngsters playing a prominent role for the ‘Canes this year.
*And big time cheers to the Atlanta Thrashers, who lost goaltender Ondrej Pavelec early in the first period when he collapsed and lost consciousness while play went on at the other end of the ice. His club somehow remained focused despite the scare and broke a 1-1 tie on a goal from Andrew Ladd late in the second period and added a penalty shot marker from Evander Kane (his second tally of the night) to pad the lead late in the middle frame en route to a 4-2 decision over the stalwart Washington Capitals.
I keep saying the Southeast is on the rise, folks… In the (very) early-going this year, we’re already seeing some of the exact reasons why.
Atlanta’s here in Tampa tonight, looking to build on last night’s momentum and spoil the Lightning’s home opener. Feel free to hang out with me on Twitter for some chatter during the game.
