IS Datsyuk Hart Worthy?

Pierre LeBrun of ESPN answers some rants from the fans…

My rant involves Pavel Datsyuk and why he’s not considered the most dominant player in the NHL. This past week, I attended a Caps-Canes game in Carolina to see Ovechkin. I have now seen Datsyuk, Crosby and Ovechkin all live, and neither Crosby nor Ovechkin is as dominant all over the ice as Datsyuk. Sure, Crosby and Ovechkin score more goals and points than Datsyuk, but that is only one half of the rink. Every time Datsyuk is on the ice, a buzz goes through the air. He will back-check like a dog and steal the puck away from you….

(LeBrun): I totally agree with you and have always raved about Mr. Datsyuk. Check out what I wrote in the Power Rankings this week. One of the reasons he hasn’t had the same kind of league-wide praise/buzz is because the man doesn’t talk. He’s quiet, goes about his business, and doesn’t attract media attention. I’ve tried to interview him a few times, and while you can tell he’s a very smart man, his actual quotes aren’t of much use. It’s just not this thing. But he deserves to be considered among the top players in the world ... and right now, one month into the season, I’d argue he’s in the Hart Trophy debate.

many more responses to the rants…

So 10 years into his career, the MSM has finally “discovered” our little secret in Motown.

Just because he is not a chatterbox Ham like alex, and a cherry picking “home grown” canadian like cindy, doesn’t mean he isn’t their equal Offensively, and their Superior in the defense/penalty kill area.

Even if he “only” scores 30 goals and 85 pts, he is a better all around player than both of the aforementioned “super-stars”

It’s amazing that this guy has been “invisible” for so long.  I wish there were more like him.

I wouldn’t really consider Datsyuk invisible to any type of media that pays even the slightest attention to hockey.  He’s won how many Selke Awards and is routinely mentioned as one of, if not the, best defensive forward in hockey most of the time.  Two years ago, he was a finalist for the Hart.  That doesn’t sound like a guy who has been invisible to me.  The fact he plays for a team that is usually not just a playoff contender, but a Cup contender, hurts his chances at MVP.  It’s too early to talk about the Hart or any other trophy right now.

Just because he is not a chatterbox Ham like alex, and a cherry picking “home grown” canadian like cindy,

What a dumb statement to make.  And I would argue that he should be a better all around player than either Crosby or Ovechkin.  Most of the time, as players tend to age and learn the tricks/improve, they get better offensively.  But why make sense when we can just throw out blind hate that isn’t even founded on any type of logic whatsoever?

Now that’s just silly. Pavel is one of the best interviews in hockey. You just have to know the right questions to ask. Like the post-game interview after he fought Cory Fairy last month…

Interviewer: When was the last time you fought someone during a game?

Pavel (with a straight face): About 10 minutes ago.

But why make sense when we can just throw out blind hate that isn’t even founded on any type of logic whatsoever?

Um, you’re new around here, aren’t you? smile

I second that notion. Besides, the hart trophy is more of a media popularity contest than anything else.

Wording aside, it is pretty obvious that Ovechkin is a tremendous extrovert where Datsyuk is not. He does have a wonderful sense of humor, but he doesn’t broadcast it far and wide like Ovechkin does. Also, although Datsyuk is the better overall player, Ovechkin is a pure scoring talent, and that is very photogenic and noticeable. Less subtle.

And Crosby DOES get a push from being North American. It’s just the way it is - no way would it be enough to get him attention if he was a mediocre player, but he is very talented and although he doesn’t seem very comfortable with so much attention, he does seem resigned to it and thus deals with the press very well.

I don’t think it’s about the voters knowing about him and his abilities. Anyone that watches at least parts of a few Wings games in a season that knows hockey sees what he does and can see how important he is to the team.

I think it has more to do with the culture and expectation that sort of locked in the voters’ minds when it comes to the MVP.

I think there are a lot of voters that probably cut their teeth and grew up around high-fliers in the ‘70s and ‘80s, where 60 goal years were (relatively speaking) common and even a guy like Jimmy Carson had a few bang-up offensive years. The game has obviously changed, and the voters really haven’t.
