How’s This For A Slump?

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

Here are the unnatural occurrences by the Red Wings:

• They have been outscored 16-4 in their four losses.

• Three-time Selke Trophy winner Pavel Datsyuk has a minus-8 plus-minus rating in his last six games.

•Dan Cleary, who had 26 goals last season, doesn’t have a goal in his first nine games.

•Henrik Zetterberg, an 80-point player, is on pace for 27.

• They are 18th in the league on the power play and 21st on the penalty kill.

“Obviously we are having a hard time scoring goals,” Holland said. “We think we have people that have showed over time that they score at a certain standard, and they are not at that standard now. We are nine games in, and we think we will come around.”

They hit a couple hot goalies. It’s a long season, and they’re still (barely) north of 500. A week ago, they were the greatest thing EVER.

But drinking isn’t a bad idea, either.

Cleary, according to Ken and Mick, is apparently ailing from something but playing through it.  He’s not taking the punishment he normally will, and when he doesn’t he’s basically ineffective and can’t be productive.  He has to play in-your-face..

As for the PK, a lot of that falls of Bertuzzi’s head, who takes terrible penalties that always result in a PPG given up it seems.

I don’t think you can just say they played hot goalies.

In a couple games, Conklin was bad and it really took the air out of their sails. In the other couple games, the team was just mediocre as a whole.

It happens. The season is 82 games and with the level of parity in the league now you just don’t have seasons like ‘95-‘96.

I’m definitely concerned about the poor level of play, but we also saw the talent is as high as ever in the first five games. The truth of the team lies somewhere closer to the true talent level, so as usual, it’s all about health. If they have health, they will have a great season.

Why has he played every game then?  It’s October, for god’s sake, not the playoffs.  Why are Eaves, Miller and Emmerton taking turns sitting when they’re healthy?

Great question. If we’re touting depth, USE IT.

Because Cleary is a Babcock Guy, and the others apparently aren’t.

Being a Babcock Guy supercedes all else, haven’t you learned that by now?  On-ice performance means nothing, track record means nothing…. all that matters is that you are Babcock’s Guy.  It’s been that way for years now.

And for the record, I would have already called up Nyquist and had him playing, had Emmerton playing, and given guys like Helm, Miller, Eaves, and Abby all the icetime they wanted so long as they kept playing hard.  It was abundantly clear after 2 games this needed to happen.

They need to get Brendan Smith the hell in there ASAP after his suspension as well.  He can’t do any worse that the other defenders…
