How Does The Arizona Coyotes Sound?

from Lisa Halverstadt of the Arizona Republic,

Glendale has posted draft agreements with a potential Phoenix Coyotes buyer on the city website….

The agreement would have Glendale pay roughly $300 million in arena management fees to a group led by former San Jose Sharks chief executive Greg Jamison and another $24 million in capital funding over the course of the 20-year deal.

During the course of the agreement, Glendale would likely receive more than $14 million in rent and millions of dollars more from surcharges on each ticket.

The draft agreements also call for Jamison’s group to attempt to change the National Hockey League team’s name to the Arizona Coyotes.

a bit more...

How many more people will Glendale have to layoff?

IIRC, that name was rumored when they moved out to Glendale in the first place.

My guess less than if the team leaves town and the Westgate Center goes broke and they still get to pay of the $250 million in bonds.

This is just a joke.  The city can’t afford it.  The idiot who even put the team here, in Glendale, should be held liable.  At least putting a team in Phoenix seemed to make sense.  Unless you realized that all the snowbird fans that like hockey still root for the team of where they come from.  And they all have better things to do than go watch a failing franchise and team in a lousy location.  They go to Arizona because of the weather, to play golf etc, not sit in an arena.

This is the kind of stunt a minor league team pulls a season before folding in an effort to “extend their fan market”.  I’ve been a fan of a minor league team that did this, and they folded anyways.  It never, ever helps.

You pick a name, and then you stick with it.  “Rebranding” never, ever works.

Didn’t the Cardinals do this a few years after moving to Arizona?

Yeah and it didn’t work:  it took a new stadium and a Super Bowl appearance to save them, honestly.  The rebranding initially did nothing,

Rebranding has nothing to do with this the Coyotes aren’t requesting this change, it is a demand of the City of Glendale. They don’t want a Phoenix named team in their city.
