Flyers sign Wayne Simmonds to a 6-year, $24 million extension

Well hell, as Ed Snider’s gonna ask for a quarter of a it back, per TSN:

The Philadelphia Flyers and forward Wayne Simmonds have agreed to a six-year contract extension.

The deal is believed to have an annual average value of around $4 million per season.

The 23-year-old scored a career-high 28 goals to go with 21 assists while playing in all 82 games in his first season with the Flyers. He was traded to Philadelphia from the Los Angeles Kings along with Brayden Schenn last June, 2011 as part of the Mike Richards deal.

“Sure, Wayne. Here’s a $24M deal that we’re working feverishly to make sure turns into an $18M deal before you’re going to be allowed to play with the Flyers again.”

Or… you know… what Herm said.

James Neal at 6-years, $30 million or Wayne Simmonds at 6-years, $24 million.

Tough call, right?

Doesn’t really matter, though.  They’ll trade him next offseason.

Unless $12 million of this is frontloaded, it boggles my mind that Simmonds would sign this contract now, for reasons that JJ and Herm already said.

On the other side, who knows how much of a rollback will occur and who knows how much the cap will go down?  It’s entirely possible that the deal he signs now will be better than the one that would be available when he’s a free agent.

Wait, so this kicks in next year, not this one, so bonuses don’t apply and it’s subject to any future reduction Snider and Jacobs negotiate, including any frontloading.

I really don’t understand why Simmonds or his agent would want this deal at this particular time. Or why they would sign a six-year deal with a club that trades anyone that signs long-term deals these days.
