“I spoke to almost a third of the general managers today and I was a little bit surprised to find out that there is a group of them that has gone to [NHL commissioner] Gary Bettman and [deputy commissioner] Bill Daly and made it very clear that they are very unhappy with the way that Brendan Shanahan has handled [the length] of the suspensions.”

Would be interesting to find out if the GMs that approached Lil’ Gary and his sidekick are from teams whose players have been suspended.

IMO they haven’t started very incrementally.  For instance:  Brendan Smith (a rookie) lost 8 games for a head shot that was fairly marginal.  Now he’s a repeat offender.  what happens if another hit happens in the playoffs 4 years from now.  Will he get 12-15 games?  Doesn’t that give opposing players a reason to embellish hits?

There are also a few others but this one sticks to me because he’s NOT a career minor leaguer/fringe player like Staubitz, or a repeat offender like Wisniewski.

I think the first offense should 2-4 games, second offense 5-10 games, third offense 12-20 games.  Wisniewski is losing over $500k in salary for a preseason hit (although it was among the dumber plays in the preseason).

Unless of course they are trying to get rid of hitting altogether.

I mean if Phaneuf is unlucky the guy ducks his head into him when he sees the hit coming, Phaneuf could be looking at sitting a bit.  How pissed would Burke be then?

People pay money to see these hits and players playing hockey, not figure skating.

Boo hoo. An owner/general manager should be interested in protecting their investments. If that means one of your guys learns a lesson now in order to keep the rest of your guys safe in the future, so be it.

Argue the specifics of a play like the Brendan Smith one if you’d like, but as for the big picture, things are right about where they should be.

Repeat offender status resets after 18 months or so, I believe, so the first argument by Bobafett is invalid.

And starting slow NEVER works. The only way this is going to have any effect is to hit with severe enough penalties from the start that players actually pay attention. If they don’t pay attention then nothing will change.

People pay money to see these hits and players playing hockey, not figure skating.

And they would rather pay money to see the BETTER players playing hockey, not whichever schlubs are left standing after all the most talented players have their brains scrambled. Straw man argument.

Me too. For a sport that promotes such an image of toughness, there are an awful lot of whining suits in the front offices.

If the GM’s are unhappy, it means Shanny is doing his job, and doing it well.
