Early Season Norris Trophy Candidates

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

4. Alexander Edler, Vancouver Canucks

Edler was only one point off the defenseman scoring lead as of Wednesday morning but brings so much more than that to the plate.

5. Kimmo Timonen, Philadelphia Flyers

He plays against the top offensive line from the opposing team every night and still manages to produce offensively. Underrated as ever.

Lebrun doesn’t actually watch any hockey anymore, does he?

Absolutely laughable list.

Why even discuss such things 12-13 games into the season?

I thought it laughable a week ago when he stated that the Bruins went from first to worst…after 9-10 games into the season.

It’s just another part of the media’s need for content, regardless of its value.

exactly !! primis doe not have a Clue & LeBrun is just as Bad, Letang at the halfway point of last season was in the running if not the favorite & in the end wasn’t even in consideration

Take your midol suggestion and shove it up your arse. Might improve your mood. Might also improve your judgement when one person who’s obviously a Red Wings fan judging by his avatar disagrees with the list. He didn’t come out and say OMGNICKLIDSTROMRULESALL. He said the list is a joke, and it is. Yet you take it as a threat because a very good Penguin defenseman is at the top of said list. Who’s the homer here?

Letang is Very Important to the Pens But I don’t think he is the Best D Man in the League !!

Glad to see Erik Karlsson at least get a mention -

I admit, I’ve had my doubts as to whether he would ever be effective in his own zone, but he’s improved a great deal in that regard. He’s learned to use his stick and his speed much more effectively (though he still struggles when trying to contain bigger forwards).

Karlsson’s a big reason why the Sens powerplay is better than it’s been in years, and why they’re currently doing better than most people expected they would be. If he can continue to improve defensively, he might get into the conversation here - but realistically he’s probably a few years from being a real Norris candidate.

As a blackhawks fan, I dislike both the wings and the pens…but I’m gonna go ahead and say that evilpens is the one going bonkers here…the only relevant thing you have added to the discussion is that Letang isnt the best d-man in the league.

despite the fact that this list is out now…which is laughable, I’m not sure this list even has the best defenders in the league at this point on it. Weber has not been that great, so is he on the list just because he was great last year? The most notable thing he has done so far is to get called for boarding in back to back games…

Can you stop being an incompetent, illiterate fool for a second (if you ever can) and please point out above where i said anything about the Red Wings?

No?

Good.  Then sit down here and I’ll try to use smaller words mostly so you can understand.

That list is bad.  I can understand how you would not recognize this since you don’t watch anything outside of Pens games, and thus nothing else exists outside of them.

Suter has been more valuable in NAS than Weber and is IMO the rock and anchor on that blueline.  Without Suter the Preds are in trouble.  He does the little things Weber doesn’t/won’t and never gets enough credit.

Phaneuf hasn’t actually been as spectacular as everyone wants to make him.  He’s been Good.  He’s benefitted from being on a hit team at the moment.  We all know the Leafs are going to crash and when they do (along with the Sens in that division) so will any merits to him being in the discussion.  Phaneuf has not bettered or changed him game, he’s gotten some breaks that have kept him from being quite so exposed yet.

Edler and Timonen are Good.  Norris is not Good, it’s Great, and quite frankly Timonen has started to get really exposed more often recently.  He still makes some smart plays and blocks shots, all that good stuff.  But his decision-making isn’t as god and he seems to want to act like he’s still 25 or something, and he’s not.  As for Edler, there are entire games where he kinda’ disappears (like the Detroit game).  Not consistent enough.

I’m in the camp that Souray should be near the very top of any list (however premature the list may be).  Huge difference-maker in Dallas.

My vote right now would be for Suter though.

Clear enough for you, EvilPens?
