from Eric Stephens of the OC Register,
Bruce Boudreau, the team continuing to struggle since he took as over coach, said that it sometimes takes a goalie to be the one who snaps a team out of its funk. It didn’t happen in the Ducks’ 5-3 loss to the Dallas Stars on Monday night.
“We need to get it maybe better than it has to be at this stage, to get us in a mode where we start feeling confident about ourselves,” Boudreau said. “And then all of a sudden, we just need average goaltending.
“A lot of times, coaches sit there and go, ‘Boy, we need our goalie to steal us one here.’ I think sometimes (that) s what it’s going to take to get back on the right track.”
Hiller, who allowed all five goals on 33 shots Monday, and Ellis have struggled trying to carry the load.
Hiller called out his teammates after a home loss to Minnesota two weeks ago, but he has allowed his share of bad goals and has numbers — 8-13-5 record, 3.08 goals-against average, .900 save percentage — that are off his career marks.
Ellis has made just six starts, but his lone victory came in his first — a 41-save performance Oct. 17 at San Jose. He hasn’t given a concrete reason to see action beyond the occasional game.
