The Tennessean’s Josh Cooper spoke to Nashville Predators GM David Poile about Ryan Suter, and Poile told Cooper that he’s not quite at take-it-or-leave-it…
“I haven’t done that to this point, but I think that’s probably the proper thing to do,” Poile said. “It’s a tough situation we’re in. Ryan controls all the cards right now, and if he comes back and signs with us, that’s terrific and we live happily ever after, but we need to move this forward because there’s a couple of other directions we may want to go if we knew that he wasn’t coming back.”
But he’s close:
Poile did not divulge the length or money of the contract, but said that this shouldn’t be an issue. The Predators are believed to be able to give Suter a deal that’s on par with other offers he has fielded today.
“We’re going to be competitive on term and we’re going to be competitive on money,” Poile said. “We’ve done all the talking on a different situation, it’s just time to take it to another step.”
Poile said Predators Coach Barry Trotz has been in contact with Weber about Suter throughout the day.
“I want to include Shea in the process,” Poile said.
Added Poile, “Everything else is kind of revolving around Suter as it has been, and I’m trying to say in the best way I can, if I have any ability, I’d like to resolve this sooner than later, because there are other directions to go and we’re running out of options. We may not be able to affect that, but I need to do that.”
In terms of other notes, Poile said he “talked” with free agent forward Zach Parise. When asked if he was told if the Predators were out of the mix, Poile said, “I don’t know that yet.”
