Corporate America, Keep Your Hands Off The Leafs

from Michael Grange of Sportsnet,

What to do when you’re favourite team is the potential object of a raid by US-based corporate pirates?

Back at Occupy Toronto Decoste mulled over the possibility of leading a small band of disaffected hockey fans to protest corporate greed as it relates to the Leafs - or at least American-based corporate greed.

If his team is going to be owned by faceless, bottom-line focused capitalists, they should at least be from Toronto. It only seems fair.

“Canadian teams should stay in Canadian hands,” Decoste said. “When you make sports second and business first it’s to the game’s detriment. If you’re a sports fan and not necessarily a fan of Wall Street, that’s not going to work for you.”

So ‘Occupy ACC’—this could work?

This shouldn’t even count as journalism.  And no, this doesn’t have anything to do with complaining about the Canadian media.  Here’s why:

Michael Grange writes this report for Sportsnet… more specifically, ROGERS Sportsnet, a company owned by Rogers Communications, the $20 Billion Canadian communications giant… the one which has been reportedly trying to buy the same thing that Providence is now interested in buying.

Grange mentions that in the article of course, hidden away in a throwaway paragraph after he’s spent the the entire run-up talking about how a faceless corporation owning the Leafs would be the worst possible thing.  He ties it to the Occupy protests and then corporate greed, hoping that by the time he actually does mention a giant Canadian corporation being in the running that people will have already focused their disgust at the concept solely on Rogers’ biggest competitor for the purchase.

He says that the preferred thing would be a small consortium of secret Toronto rich guys buy the team… because that’s actually true, but not very threatening.  Then he ties it all up with a pretty bow saying that if there’s going to be a greed-driven corporation buying the Leafs, then go with the greed-driven corporation that the author of this piece just so happens to work for.

Considering the source of this article, this isn’t a journalistic piece, it’s an advertisement for public opinion and it’s disgusting.

Except when they need Americans to own the team such as what happened in Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa!
