CBA negotiations canceled for today after morning meeting between big guns

Updated 5x with Fehr talking to the media at 2:59 PM: Strange goings-on in Toronto today, per the Fourth period’s David Pagnotta…

Yeah, well not so much, per the Canadian Press’s Chris Johnston, whose Twitter trail starts at noon:

Update: As my boss points out, however, it’s highly probable that there are still going to be meetings between the players and NHL regarding the “guts of the CBA issues.”

Update #2: From Johnston:

NHL collective bargaining talks have been cancelled for the day and will resume Thursday. It’s not clear why the meetings have been called off.

The NHL and the NHL Players’ Association were scheduled to return to the table at 1 p.m. ET.

The change of plans comes after top league and union executives held a separate meeting this morning. Two sources say NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly spent about two hours with players’ association executive director Donald Fehr and his brother Steve Fehr, the union’s No. 2 man.

It’s unclear exactly what was discussed.

The sides are resuming talks this week with competing bids on the table and no clear road forward.

The current collective agreement is set to expire Sept. 15 when the NHL says it will lock out the players if a new deal hasn’t been reached.

Update #3: Here’s the dealy-o from the Hockey News’s Ryan Kennedy…
